The GT is a bit over priced for the condition its in I think.  That said, I'd buy either (or both) at the right price

RS. If I had the spare cash I would probably be checking it out, although the current uncertainty in Canberra employment keeps everything clenched (especially the wallet).

GT is a good base for a resto, but you'd want to pay at least 10-12k less (maybe more).

I have never been of fan of the RS, ugly back end, ugly dash, so I would vote for a GT, but not one with a sun roof - you will spend enough time chasing oil leaks so you dont want water as well, and not at that price.  Even if you dont paint it yet, there's lots of $$$$ to spend on the engine, brakes and master cyl will be stuck, shocks, bearings, seals, radiator, fuel pump, fuel lines and tank clean, exhaust, decent mags, rego hassles, and I would be amazed if the sill trim hasnt caused the usual rust.  I would want to confirm eng number and know what it was bored to when he rebuilt it.  40thou is absolute max for me as next bore would most likely take it to 60 which is the limit.  350 Holley run too rich on these, the weber will most likely need some work and will also need the original linkage and insulator plate.  State of inlet manifold would be a concern.  The one of gumtree for $8500 is probably better value - if the body work has been done right.  A$16k head start for new paint & new engine, the rest of the work would be the same.  It would be a lot cheaper project.  I looked at the green one in WA for $10k a couple of weeks ago.  I reckon the red one looks a lot better so maybe worth around $15k if numbers match and not much rust.  I hope he does get a good price though, will set a bench mark for the rest of us.

If the paint work is original and solid this is a great survivor car which could be maintained rather than restored. It would be a rare beast in original paint with a sunroof.

Nice to see another sunroof Capri out there. This is likely to be one of the earliest sunroof cars (May 72).

I agree with yellowfire - if that paint work is original on teh GT it would be a tragedy to strip it and re-paint it - best thing is to just cut and polish IMHO.

With regards to RS or GT. The thing I find with the RS is that it holds it's high value only in the true Capri cirlces. Most people who remember Capri's in there youth won't recall a big spoiler on the back of the car. I dare say anyone who came across one would question whether the lights / dash are original. SO the RS is a valuable commodity to a rather small niche market - particularly as the Money value is so much higher. The likelihood of getting your money back in a depressed market is not so high as this chap is finding now - could you imagine an RS for sale for 30K 5 years ago ? it would have sold in hours.

The GT is a much more recognisable car in OZ, the performance is the same give or take and comparative to a GT falcon is still a cheap cheap option for an original GT - whether the 25K is expensive or not, only the buyer can say. A Capri is only original once so I think the price reflects this - it's probably not priced as an intended restoration but rather a piece of OZ muscle history.

For me, for the value for money and comparing these 2 cars the GT wins - easily.

A lot of the older guys will look at these two and nostalgia will be the determining factor for their preferance.
Trouble is they both need total restos so a lot of time and effort and cash will be involved.
What interests me is the buid plate on the gt under trim says B2., and sure enough it has the cloth inserts. Same seats as my car had new although my plate doesnt have B2 just B.
It puzzles me why ford changed over to the superior seat a la tc cortina style ( shape, not cover) in dec 1971 only to change back to the old style (with high back) in may72 and november 72 ( my car).
When did the superior seats phase out and why?

I didnt pick the cloth inserts - it is a lovely car (the GT). I know the rs is the rarer but the GT, just polish it, hop in a drive - brings back memories - it's that old dash etc - and the 72 model is the nicest .. the sun roof is a bonus to me.

Based on zooming in on the photos I reckon it needs a bit more than a polish, but if the seller put in a bit of effort to at least get the GT running he would have a better chance.  Its a bit unclear how long it has been sitting.  Last rego in 92 but engine rebuild in 98.  In any case its been sitting for a long time, maybe over 20 years.
