Capri Mk 1 H4 Headlight Conversions - Buyer Beware!
This may not be news to wiser members of this forum but early in December I purchased a set of H4 headlights on EBay to replace the rusting lights in my very original 72 XL. The short story is they don't fit & there a number of differences to the original lights. I have sourced lots of parts, both within Australia & overseas, & this is the first time I have encountered a difficulty which is disappointing. I have contacted the seller with some suggested changes to his advert, but I haven't had any response. The attached picture shows some of the differences but if you are really bored & want the long, sad story, then it is on my blog at: http://fordcaprichatter.blogspot.com.au/

You mentioned in your blog the items supplied DID NOT have the park light facility as described in the advert. If you paid via PayPal, then surely that is cause for a claim as being "not as described"....part from many others issues about not fitting. Note that you have 45 days (IIRC) friom date of purchase to lodge a claim. Basically, if it is not what was advertised, then it is the wrong goods. Being able to make a claim for "wrong goods" is one of the benfits of PayPal transactions. Or even explore a Dispute claim thru eBay. Do it thru eBay, not outside the system. Tehn they have a record (esp. re timeframes mentioned above). I have had success with refunds for wrong goods supplied / did not fit as claimed by seller. Good luck. p.s. you've got me worried about my spare pair in the cupboard....excuse me, gotta go check......

The lights on the left look like Mk1 facelift.

Thank you, accapmad, for your advice. I have had to seek a refund through Paypal once before when a UK supplier went broke but I wasn't aware of the 45 day time limit so I had better get my receipts out & get into to making a claim. Ian

AFAIK, the Mk1 facelift lights are significantly bigger - not just a few mm. They need to fill the gap left by the indicator (now inset into bumper), headlight and the narrower centre dip in the bonnet (we all know this as we all want the RS 4-headlight look that doesn't fit with the pre-facelift bonnet). Check out some Mk1 Vs Mk1 facelift pics on google

Then what? I have some of these as well but cant find any alternative. I got mine a couple of years ago when I was told valiant lights would fit. Seems a few ebay sellers have got onto this now probably not realising the differences. They have been sitting in the box waiting for the rebuild so I didnt pick up on the lack of park light until you mentioned it. Would be keen to know if you find an alternative.

There are still Asian copies available new from Yesterford, they are about $200 a pair. I *think* the ones you bought may be Ford Courier and Mazda B(?) ute. When buying H4's there are 2 types of parking light, one has a hole drilled into the casing for a plug in globe, the other has a clear area about the size of a 10 cent coin in the reflector. This type use a clip on holder for an external globe. You could research Mazda 808, Austin Kimberley, VG Valiant, try ebay UK they should be plentiful over there.

Did a quick check on eBay for Torana and Valiant square headlights....zip, zilch , nothing...amazing !!! Looked for Capri headlight found eBay item number:280759369230 Thought just occurred to me Maybe the "wrong" ones in question are indeed for a Capri, but for the Convertible !!!! They look about the same size from memory.

Hi V8GT I am pleased your lights fitted & unfortunately, I bought mine from one of the other sellers. The guy that sells yours says in his add:These quality glass lights have provision for a parking light (park globes not included). All the sellers seem to use the same photos so there appears to be some differences in the actual product. The guy I bought mine from did not have in his add any statement about parking lights. I did not pick this difference out until well after the sale. Thank you all for your comments & suggestions. Ian

v8GT reference re Capri Headlamps are branded "AUTOPAL" which I know for fact are made in India and are NOT ADR approved and look wrong from a purist point of view. Don't expect to see well with non genuine, or be able to "aim" the beam professionally, as can only be found with "Lucas" original Made in England, as well as "Stanley" and "Koito". In their favour, however, is that they do fit, and do have the park lamp provision, and "Autopal" did orig make them as semi as well as fully sealed. What else can you do if nothing else is available, or GENUINE used Lucas is outside of budget ?! I will mention that "Stanley" & "Koito" brands of Japan, if you can ever find them, are so close to genuine in all aspects, except the "Lucas" logo, it brings tears to my eyes ! Genuine Lucas as well as Stanley and Koito, have not been made in many decades. I was lucky enough to find a set of each in as-new condition from a clearance sale on the M~ Peninsula recently ! 4 headlamps just lying there after thousands of "pickers" went before me ! .....and a VH40 Brake Booster ! I thought I died and went to "spare parts heaven" !!! When I found my GTV6 Mk1 Delete 4 years ago, she was fitted with "Stanley" Fully Sealed 75W/60W Halogen, as well as Hella 100WDriving lamps, and I am still impressed with the "Stanleys" even when the Hellas aren't on ! These collectable cars are so seldomly used at night, we can expect them to last a very long time electrically speaking. Good reason to invest or make your own COVERS or protectors, lest a stone should find its way straight thru the Headlamp and ruin your year. Even a flat piece of perspex held in place with a few light springs will help till better comes along

Rod, did you notice if swapping lenses made those INDIAN AutoPal throw out a better beam, or nothing improved those non-engineered "reflectors"? Can anyone comment please, whether all Capris had 4 little rubber grommets on the corners of the Headlamp Bucket to act as a "bed" for the headlamp to rest on ? I just happened to notice the other day, one still clinging for dear life ! .......The other 7 were missing and "packing" was used to stop looseness. They were correct lamps albeit of the Japanese maker "Stanley", which I know are "correct fit" from years in the trade. Just to be sure, I tried a Genuine UK "Lucas"..........exactly the same. SUMMING UP: AVOID "AUTOPAL" Headlamps at all costs; they are absolute rubbish made in INDIA many decades ago and still hanging around like a bad smell at many "swap meets", & Garage sales, and ON-LINE, etc

yeah it did throw out a better beam, well it seem to havent driven with them but it looks much more better than the standard autopal ones ... the reflectors are not that great and whatever ya do dont even wipe the autopal ones lucky i had spare as the chrome reflective paint they use is crap comes of very easy .... if i can find another hella h4 original one with good reflector ill probably swap em back to the hella or lucas .. got one real good hella h4 one but looked better than a autopal even after all these yrs . the hella still had better chrome than the new autopal ... didnt seem to have any rubber grommets on all 4 corners or i just didnt notice them but they are on very secure and dont move except the adjuster screws ... one thing i did notice is that some of my headlight cover surrounds, the metal ones that screw down to the slam panel .. some have holes you stick screwdriver thru to screw to adjust the beam direction etc without taking them off to do it and others dont have the holes
