MK2 escort rear brakes not working ...

Hi All,

Im now getting to the final stages of getting the car ready for a roadworthy, and tonight went to bleed the brakes after putting back in the master cylinder / brake lines etc....

The problem I have is that the rear brakes are getting no pressure at all it would seem. The fronts bled no problems, but the rears aren't bleeding at all. To test wether the brakes were working at the rear, I jacked up the rear of the car, handbrake off, out of gear and got my wife to stand on the brake pedal. The rear wheels spun freely with no brake action at all.

Brakes are pretty basic, so im guessing the problem cant be too complicated?. The first thing that pops into my head is the pressure differential switch. But to be honest I don't really know what it does? (or rather how it works). While cleaning up all the bits and pieces on my car I pulled the switch apart, and it was all rusted  and seized inside. I cleaned it up as best I could, but really don't know if I made it any better.

It could also be a blockage somewhere in the line to the rear of the car.

Does anyone have any ideas as to where the problem may lie?.

It does take a while to pump fluid through to the rears given they run the length of the car then into the right drum, then across to the left where the bleeder is.  I little trick i often use when reassembling like this is to use a bit of compressed air to fill the fluid lines.

    1. Open the bleeder on the wheel cylinder that has one,
    2. Ensure the master reservoir is full and refit the cap
    3. Carefully apply a small amount of compressed air to the breather pin hole in the top of the master cylinder.  If you apply too much air pressure you could damage the fluid reservoir.

If you dont get fluid coming out the bleeder doing this i would certainly suspect the proportioning valve.  I saw some dude selling new ones on ebay last week if it is stuffed.

    Make it go FASTER!

Try loosening the rear line at the prop valve, if nothing comes out she could be seized or binding and would help to eliminate any problems with rear line blockages. If it was rusted up best to replace it.

How much fluid have you passed through? From memory when my car was drained it took about two bottles to fill and then bleed it properly. I thought I had an issue but turned out it just took ages.

Also had this with a front caliper on another car but once pressure built up a bit of junk blew out and it worked.

hi all. Fitted up another valve this afternoon, re-bled the brakes and all seems to be working fine.

It did take a bit of fluid, but me and my five year old boy got the job done. He has sire legs from pressing the pedal so much!. (he wanted me to write that :)).

Thanks to all for the advice and guidance.
