Rear Axel Bearing Width

I had some new bearings pressed onto the axles of a standard diff (banjo) from an Escort Mk2 2.0ltr. When fitting the axles I noticed that the bearings were not fully flush with the end of the axle housing. I measured the width of the bearings and they came to about 22mm. The recess at the end of axle housing is about 18mm. I'd like to confirm the exact bearing width before going back for another try. I've looked up workshop manuals etc but can't seem to find any reference to bearing width. Any help appreciated.

Cheers,
Adil

My SKF bearings measure closer to 21mm. Remember there's the width of the brake drum backing plate to add to the depth of the recess, which is also held in place by the retaining plate.

Thanks for the reply. I'll measure it up again with the backing plate.
