UNDERSTEER is when you hit the wall with the front of the car. OVERSTEER is when you hit the wall with the rear. HORSEPOWER is how fast you hit the wall. TORQUE is how far you take the wall with you.

Ford Sierra 5 speed bolts straight up, or the other alternative is a Toyota Celica box (steel case are the stronger type) but you'll need a bellhousing from Dellow to suit.

You'll need sh!tloads more than a bellhousing! Toyota 5 speed to Escort kit is $1800 from Dellows.
Toyota spline is 21T so you need clutch plate, toyota yoke, bellhousing, spigot bearing, speedo cable and escort tailshaft made to length with Toyota yoke.
Some of the bits from existing ford gearbox may be usable, like clutch fork and throw out bearing but might be best to check with dellows
There's more than a few ratios with the steel case so factor that in with your diff ratio.

It's about $1100 from Dellows inc all the above but you then need a g/box and they go for about $250 or so.

They do need to be set up and there are a number of threads on here that go into this in more detail.

I believe the best thing about the celica/supra boxes is that they can be made to fit without having to cut the gear lever hole as yo can get different shifter housings that position the gear lever forward.

This is the box i'll use when / if I fit a 5 speed but I'd go the supra box as they are stronger and lighter being alloy.

    Cheers,

The guy I spoke to was admittedly a noob at the company, so could have been his mistake. $1100 is far more reasonable

Why do you need this stuff ? why not modify the toyo stuff to work

A manual tunnel will require massaging to fit the Celica box also - I obtained my Dellow kit from an auto shell hence substantially more room.
Some components may be near impossible to modify to fit the application or may require substantial rework to adapt them (bell housing etc) making it unrealistic. Additional to the list above you will need to have the Escort tailshaft shortened and balanced when fitting the Celica yolk.
As also mentioned, there is a geometry mismatch between the Escort clutch pedal and Toyota clutch mechanism as it's difficult to get the clutch to disengage completely when the pedal is pushed to the floor. Apparently the thrust bearing travel required is greater than the stroke of the clutch pedal. I'm unsure if this has been rectified in their current kit but talking to a clutch specialist this can usually be engineered out when setting it up.

    Cheers

Paul, I have been running a celica 5spd with a dellow conversion in my Escort since the mid 90's. I bought the kit, installed it and it worked. No clutch problems at all as it uses the original Escort pressure plate, clutch fork, thrust bearing and a modified diameter (Celica splined) clutch plate.

Rob, the bellhousing in the ebay link doesn't look right to me. Clutch fork and starter motor are on the wrong side and the bellhousing doesn't look right.

    Hi Craig
Thanks for that info. When I purchased the donor vehicle I found it very difficult to change gears and when disassembled the clutch plate was very worn. I assumed it was not adjusted correctly and when I spoke to a clutch specialist he explained the problem but I'm yet to reinstall and see for myself. I hope it's one less thing to worry about - thanks!

    Cheers

Hi guys. I am in the same boat. I have a celica steel cased 5 sp to go behind a 1600 kent. I bought a bellhousing out of the trading post nearly 10 years ago and it sat in the bushes out the front for 7 years. The clutch fork is rusted but the bellhousing is fine. I want to get this project going soon, so I will need some help. Should I just ring dellow?

Just put a type 9 behind my crossflow 1600. Bloody easy really used standard 1600 bellhousing, clutch and release bearing, clutch cable, gearbox mount, just need longer speedo cable, cut top of tunnel and rotate by 180 degrees (moves hole @3 inches back)
I bought some blocks for the gearbox mount from the uk but they didnt fit so made my own.
Single piece prop i have a mk2 tina one fits fine.

I found it easy as i put the engine and box together then put the lot in the car.
There are better boxes than the type 9 but if you can get one at the right price you dont need many more bits.
