MK2 RS2000 Nightime Lights

Hi All,

Was driving along in the Rs2000 last night (only after having just recently purchased it), and im pretty sure im missing a few interior dash / night time lights.

Can someone clarify for me what should actually be illuminated in the cabin with the headlights on?

Tacho - Working

You are only missing heater control light.
Console clock also had illumination but those other switches you mentioned don't illuminate. Hazard lights and rear demister switches only light up when being operated..

Good to hear you're enjoying your new car......... Not sure on the hazard light switch, I have a 1980 and had the non illuminated one, bought the illuminated type as I couldn't find an old stock or decent original............
Out of interest what are your dash/ gauge lights like? Mine have always been dim to say the least, like a candle in a jar, haha. Anyone got any suggestions or am I expecting too much after driving modern cars?
    Cheers Drew.......

    Hi Drew,

Hit the nail on the head with the dash lights. Very dim. In fact if i turn them to the lower setting with the dimmer switch, they are pretty much off altogether!.

I did read a post on this forum about a week ago about a guy changing his dash lights to an LED style replacement, which apparently helped out a lot. I think i might give this a go and see if it helps.

Welcome to the world of groping around in the darkness when driving a Ford Escort at night!
    I installed these
    http://www.ebay.com.au/it...mp;hash=item20ba77c55a
They are cheap, but expect some time for them to arrive.
    Or you could try these
    http://www.ebay.com.au/it...mp;hash=item41646e2214
Heater should just have a standard small bulb.
Check its not blown and that its contacts are clean. They can be a bit touchy.

    Davus,

I have some blue LEDs you can have if you ever pick up the cam belt cover.

It may save you about $1.50.

    Cheers,

    hi guys,

so i did what matt did and lashed out a few bucks for about 8,000,000,000 T10 wedge LED's.

However i seem to have a few problems. Has anyone else run into this issue?.

    1) On the back of the cluster, there is a series of three globes in a small loom. Globe number 1 is powered by the connector into the back of the cluster, and then globes 2 and 3 are just powered from the small loom. Then there is a fourth globe which is powered seperately. The globe powered directly from the back of the cluster (the single one) works, as does globe #1 in the small loom. However globes 2 and 3 do not work??.

    2) Even with the two globes in operation, none of the dimming seems to work,??

Has anyone who carried out this LED upgrade noticed any of these issues?.

The LEDS wont dim, they are either on or off.
Check that the globes all work before you set the cluster in place, just use a 12v transformer from an old phone charger or something similar.
The copper circuitry of the cluster becomes very worn from where the plastic globe holders twist in. Check that you have enough contact with them.
I ended up wiring some globes directly to each other because of this.
    Hope that helps.

Unlike normal globes leds require correct polarity,
    Simply spin the
non working ones 180 degrees (if you haven't tried that already).

Bang on the Money with the polarity. Thanks very much.

I work in IT, you think i should have guessed that!. As soon as you said polarity the penny dropped.

Popped out to the garage this morning before work and spun the globes around. Sure enough, they now all work.

Thanks also to Shaul for reminding me of the binary nature of LED. On or off = No dimming. Again, a brain blank moment.

Cheers guys. LED's now working. Will wait for tonight to see how they look in the dark.

I found i had to remove the blue bulb cover to make them brighter as over time the plastic had perished a bit and wasn;t letting much light though.

I removed thjem and as I had blue LEDS it made a difference.  Be careful removing the covers though as they had become very brittle.

I am thinking of getting some of the Led's with 5 globes to make them a bit brighter.
    Cheers,

Yeah the LED's i bought are a blue color, so i too removed the blue domes. Mine seemed to be in OK condition.

And along the same lines as you, I also bought (to try out), some of these in the hope that they might boost things up a bit and maybe allow me to put the original blue domes back in.

Im thinking or buying some of these:

    Or even these:

    This LED thing is addictive!
