Fitting Thermo Fan - where to locate temp sensor?
Hi Guys, I have been given a 16" thermo fan that will fit nicely in front of the engine behind the radiator and just had a few qn's. I need to place a sensor somewhere and have a few options - 1. Fit an adapter to the top radiator hose and insert sensor there 2. Blank the hole in the thermostat housing and tap a hole to suit the temp sensor. What is the thread size of the hole in the housing? 3. Get a sensor plug welded into the radiator itself. For the temp sensor am I better off with an adjustable on or one of the pre set ones that come on at 85deg and off at 80deg? Cheers, Matt

Fit a fixed temp sensor to thermostat housing.if the thread/hole is to big for your sensor get a pinto thermostat housing with no hole(pre pollution), these housings still have the boss ready to be drilled and tapped to the size of your sensor. To have correctly operating fan make sure that sensor on and off temps are well above thermostat temperature.

Example for fan sensor fitted in thermostat housing 82c thermostat 93c fan on temp 87c Fan off temp
The important part is that the off temp is bit higher than the thermostat temp. This will make sure your fan only runs when idling for a while or driven under high load and ram air is not enough.

Tridon temp switches, these can be bought in just about any auto store around the country, or if you want it cheap you could look up the one you want and then check which cars have them then go to wreckers.... http://www.tridon.com.au/...SG=8&S=35&G=483&P=2014

I dug around at the wreckers too and ended up using the thermo fan switch out of Mitsubishi Lancer (not sure which model). It bolts straight into the thermostat housing and has the 2 wires for you to wire it in to the fan relay correctly. Works perfectly.

Thanks Bacca, I have had a look and I'm pretty sure the thread is M16 x 1.5. Tridon has this same size listed for a 2000 Lancer too and it's in the heat range I want as well. 80/85. Cheers Matt

Sorry Matt can't confirm the thread as I haven't got much pinto stuff left and 2 heads I have neither have thermo housing.
I usually try and use ford/Mazda(laser/323 or Telstar/626), nice single wire m16 thread comes in few diff temps and also comes in both normally open and normally closed versions. All of these switches are to be used with a relay.
Cheers

What is the diff between "normally open ground" and "normally ground"? Does "Normally open ground" means that when it get's up to temp the switch activates and grounds the circuit thus you'd wire ground to the switch? I am looking at a switch from a Magne that is normally open ground with one spade terminal. Cheers, Matt

Normally open or normally closed describes the state switch is in before it activates due to temperature.
You can use either type as long as you use appropriate relay

Hey MAtt. Yes normally open means it will ground on temp. Provided that is that it is a grounding sensor. If it has just one pin then it will be grounding. More than one pin and you would want to check the pinouts.
