the black thing that fuel lines go to

Gday, currently cleaning my engine bay up and not sure what the black thing is passenger side on the firewall. Has fuel line to it and a return and an overflow. Is this needed? Car is already over rego and if its pollution an not needed then ill remove it. Cheers

Charcoal canister, absorbs fuel vapours from the fuel tank which get used by engine under certain conditions, if connected properly of course. So yes It is part of the pollution gear on the car.

Is it needed or can it be removed and run the risk of a defect? May just try and reroute it somewhere lower maybe

Your engine will run fine without it, as long as you plug up any vac leaks. Is it illegal to remove on a road reg car, yes. Will a cop notice it missing, probably not. Whether you remove or not is your call.
