Had a win today... Got sick of ordering and waiting for jets so bit the bullet and brought a large assortment, they arrived during the week. Started with idle jets, from what I've read the optimum setting for the idle screws is 1 1/2 turns. Went from a 50 up to 60 idle which set it at 2 turns. Tried 65's which got it to the magic 1 1/2 turns but the engine seemed to go 'flat' under 2500rpm. Back to the 60's and in with some F7 emulsion tubes to richen it down low, same thing idle screws perfect but an even worse flat spot at lower revs. So back in with the F11's. A bit more fettling and looks like I'll have to settle on around 2 turns. Power is good now, up there with the sidedraughts it used to have, it's smooth, really free revving and sounds great. With the rest of the country in a heat wave we've had record rain here in Perth so its staying in the garage today but I'm looking forward to getting it out for a proper run and some more tinkering in the coming weeks... Cheers Drew

G'day Mario, Carbs are 44idf, 36mm chokes. Cam is almost stock after an over zealous dyno guy took the lobes off of my good one by revving it cold... Thats why I'm doing myself nowadays... Cheers Drew

Hi drew if its a stock cam try 140 mains f16 elmusion tubes and 50 or 55f9 idle jets and 180 air corrector jets that should get it running very close you mite be better off running 34mm chokes with stanard cam cheers mario.

Thanks mate, crunching the numbers on that combo and it sounds pretty viable... I've got everything but the F16's so they'll be ordered. From what I read they're a leaning jet like the F11 but a bit richer? Also does anyone know anything about the emulsion tube numbers? They seem to be all over the place, must be for a reason but why not put them numerically from lean to rich or vice versa? Leaving the chokes alone for now, planning a rip snorta engine in the future. As I said before this car is the unfinished galleon of my life so far haha... Cheers Drew.

It had an RL32 and used to run sidedraughts. I told the guy in the shop it hadn't been run for a few years, I'm guessing he gave it a boot full cold and before it had oiled. I've been advised of some other horror stories coming from there, but only heard them after it was too late. Forgotten about it now, moving forward. F16's ordered I'll post how that combo goes when they arrive. Cheers Drew...

G'day all, Tried that last jet combo but lost power up top so went back to the original setup. Happy with that for now. Been thinking about building an engine so when this ex-cortina pinto came up still in the car and running for $100 I grabbed it. I needed a new alternator anyway so there was nothing to loose. The one on this engine has an auto spark sticker on it so I'm thinking it may have been re-conned at some point. Its got all of its pollution gear still attached, the best steel air cleaner I've seen in a while with no cracks around the base and a factory a/c set up hanging off the side. Now what to do with it? We're looking at property in the south west/ margaret river region to retire one day so I have to decide whether I want to be hurtling around the wine region with a hot engine or just cruising with a standard setup and air conditioning. Looking at throwing 'the lot' at the bottom end to future proof it if I do decide to go silly in the end. Plenty of time to decide... Cheers Drew. .JPG)

Great find! Please take lots of photos of the emissions set up, as it would be a handy reference for when I need to prepare the van for a licensing inspection.

Hey Rob, took heaps of pics of the pollution gear and have a diagram in an old manual, you're welcome to whatever you need... The cars been due a new alternator so I visited a couple of shops, first guy said he wasn't interested in doing 'old pommy crap' second wanted $400 so I bit the bullet and tracked down the parts to have a go at it myself. The bits took a couple of weeks to arrive so I indulged in my obsessive compulsion and started detailing it. Ended up filing off all of the casting marks, giving it a coat of paint, powdercoating the pulley and re-zinc'ing all of the fittings. Time to fit it up and see if it works as good as it looks, lol fingers crossed. Cheers Drew

I think "perfectionist" comes to mind, not that there's anything wrong with that. Sure beats the way I do things, usually the first time is as quick as possible, then the second time is to undo the first and hopefully improve a little on round one.
