1600 oil capacity

Hi all,

Can someone tell me how many litres of oil to put in a 1600 681F engine?  My mechanic is checking over a few things for me at the moment and he reckons that there was far too much in it, so i think the dipstick indicator is wrong.  If I know how much goes into it I can fix the dipstick at the same time.

Cheers!  Adam

3.25 litres according to the Gregory's manual for a 1.6 inc oil filter.

Cheers guys - I found another Ford service reference that said 3.6 litres - it sounds like it's going to be a bit of guess work with anything from 3.2-4.3 litres! :)

I don't know how much came out unfortunately - the mechanic said that when he removed the rear main seal (with the sump in place) it started to leak out immediately because the sump was too full.  To be honest I don't know if it's a bad thing or not, but he said something along the lines that the end of the crankshaft was sitting in oil - is that bad/not ideal?

These pages are from the Capri Power site, they are different from the book I have as they list 2 types of eng with 2 different amounts of oil.
I just had simillar problems with my Pinto not knowing if the dip stick was right.

If the oil level is too high the crank picks it up and overloads the bores with it causing excessive oil consumtion.
If the 1600 is in a mk1 then possibly it has a 1300 sump fitted, so maybe you should be checking the oil capacity for the 1300.
I would measure how far the crank hangs down from the bottom of the engine and transfer that measurement plus a little for clearance down from the top of the sump to ascertain the oil height then fill the sump to this level taking note of the amount of oil. Then put the dipstik in the engine and file a groove at the calculated height. A little more will be needed to fill the oil filter.

These figures are for Escort motors
    1100 and 1300 OHV 3.6L
    1600 OHV 3.6L
    1600 Twin Cam 4.7L

7.2 imp pints or approx. 4.3 litres according to my Capri manual (ford genuine)

Being a 681F it must have come from a capri because the first 1600 OHV escort was a 711M? With an escort sump, capacity would be 3.6L

Thanks all - I was told by the previous owner when I bought the van that the engine was from a Mk2 Cortina, and they kept the original Escort sump.  So I'm thinking that the capacity should be around the 3.2-3.6L mark - it would be nice to drop the sump off and check its capacity but I'd like to not do that at the moment.  But if that's the only way to know for sure I'll have to have it off the road for another week I suppose! :)

    Cheers guys!
