Capri V6 No oil in top of motor after re-build
Not getting any oil in the top of my engine. Its a 3 litre Esseex V6 (D port) and has great oil pressure, I have rebuilt it and assumed the main bearings went in upside down or the thrust washers back to front. A bottom end strip down reveals all went together perfectly, and I can push a wire up through all the oil holes in the crank and galleries. so now I'm buggered. Anyone got any ideas what to check next?

☄ Helpful
Do you change the cam bearings?, was the block chemical cleaned?? the bearings need replacing if the block was in the hot dip. My take is that the oil pump feeds the crank then the cam which feeds the rocker gear hope it helps O

No dipping no change of cam bearings. I had the cam re-ground and the lifters refaced

I assume the top end is fed oil via pushrods and assuming there is good oil pressure up to the lifters? If so you haven't put in solid pushrods, or something wrong with lifters since they have been resurfaced not allowing oil through?? Cheers

The V6 is a solid lifter motor and just the top face has been machined . Pushrods are the original items cleaned out (hollow). It has run for probably 3 hours and I only noticed something wrong when it started to squeak loudly from the tappets at number 4 cylinder. The inside of the rocker cover is bone dry and the rockers are so dry they have a powdery rust finish on them

Is the sump still on?? take the dizzy out, as the oil pump drive shaft is a hex, use a socket and attach it to the drill, and prime the oil system. see if it is pumping to the cam and the lifters. O

Sump is off but I can use a bucket of oil at the pickup. I'm thinking that I'll have to reassemble the bottom end though as I cannot see aything wrong in there. Do you happen to know where the oil enters and exits up the topend?

OK so I know I have a clear run to the base of the cam. The oil then goes up through the cam to the rockers. Here then is the problem I'll check the cam bearings for alignment, then check the cam itself as it was reground, could be blocked upper journals, hopefully my custom Clive cam (a damn nice piece of work) is all OK

Ok plot thickens but some good news. I spent the morning putting the bottom end back together, after lunch I started on the top end. There is oil at the cam, and it is being fed to the left side head, not the right hand (passengers) side head. According to Owens diagram, there is a top end oil feed from cam bearings 2 and 3. Pushrods out they are all clear now blue hazy and rusty at the top so they will be swapped. Rockers surface rusty currently looking for the cause and the search goes on......

Right head now off. Lifters removed all faces still nice. All lifter holes clear. I ran a flexi wire through the holes in the lifter tunnel, all clear. I took out the grub screw above number 2 cam bearing and ran the wire down, it was clear. The plug at the dizzy end of the lifter tunnel is still fitted. It seems the oil isn't getting to the windows in the lifters on the right hand head. Starting to go round the twist here

You should be doing all this while turning the oil pump with an electric drill, it will give you 100% proof that oil is getting where it should. Also, is there a reason the left head is off first(or at all)when the right hand is the one without oil, or is the right hand one off already?? Cheers
