Supra 5 speed conversion issues

Hey guys

I have a frustrating issue, I have a supra conversion from Dellow and have this annoying vibration on decelleration, I have checked the diff angles, the custom Prop is all good, the engine/gearbox mounts are all good and the gearbox has been checked and new bearings throughout. I still cant find what the issue is. I also had this issue with my celica conversion before the supra conversion was put in. I have read that Dellow bellhousings have been known to out of alignment. Can anyone help me find a solution to this frustrating problem?

I was thinking the out of alignment issue too. From memory there was a thread detailing the issue on here or rsm ?

    Thanks for the links guys,

I have read these threads but unfortunately the Supra bellhousing doesn't have the circle in it to measure the run out, it has an oval opening which I can not see how it is possible to measure the misalignment.

Does the conversion use a spiggot bearing or a bush?  I recall a V6 I had with a 5 speed did a similar thing, when I split the box from the motor the guy had used a turned bush instead of a roller bearing in the end of the crank.  I cannot say though that this was the cause of the problem as I sold the parts off

The escort 2lt to steel case conversion using a dellow conversion uses a bush and I have used the bush for over 80,000km without any issues so it should not be a problem unless the bush is worn and now oversize... they are bronze and should be soaked in light oil overnight to 'preoil' them. Th e first one I utilised I did not preoil and it wore out quickly, but did not cause any vibration issues...

The only vibrational issues I have ever had in the escort related to uni joints in the tailshaft that were quite worn at one stage....

i have the W58 conversion in my escort and had the same sort of vibration issues that you are talking about, cant remember if it was only on deceleration, but i know how annoying it is.
turned out on mine it was stuffed tailshaft uni joints, and in escorts the uni's are not rebuildable, so i upgraded to bigger rebuildable units and problem solved. no more vibrations.

Thanks for the advice. The spigot is a turned bronze bush as part of the Dellow kit. I had a custom Propshaft made and they replaced the Unis with heavy duty ones. How can I diagnose stuffed unis?

    Hi Kizzy,
The strange thing that it is only on deceleration.

Do you still have the problem in neutral and with the clutch in?

If it is not the gearbox and the problem is when you are not under load I would be looking at the diff and or the tailshaft. Had you used the same diff in the same car previously? What else has changed?

Clutches can also cause problems, although it doesn't sound like a clutch drama in this instance.

    Cheers,

    Thanks damion,

As soon as you put the clutch in or put into nuetral, it goes away, it only happens when the engine is being driven by the diff, I have had the diff totally rebuilt as i was sure that was the issue but it is still the same,
the gearbox is facing down 3 degrees and the diff facing up 2 degrees (approx as gravity angle finder is not the most reliable.)

The tailshaft has been balanced twice and new unis were replaced before balancing.

I did the hilux diff conversion and gearbox at the same time but it wasn't doing it with standard mk2 diff and type 9 box
