Rack & Pinion Oil Leak

I have a Mk2 escort rack & pinion that I took out of a car and clean it up,
its been laying on some cardboard and started leaking oil from one of the boots,
I thought there is suppose to be grease in the boots;
does a rack have oil in it ? anywhere ?
I just moved it again and there is clean looking oil running out.
some help please advise whats right or wrong
Jim

Yes, they are filled with oil.  The gregory manual explains what to do in great detail.  I can email that section to you if you want?

My understanding is that the racks were filled with oil from the factory thus possibly the issue with yours.
I personally alway use grease whenever I rebuild a rack as it never leaks out and provides ample lubrication.
I would recommend that you disassemble the rack, clean and relubricate it with a high quality extreme pressure grease.
This will provide years of stress free motoring.

    Hi Jim
Suttonmotorsport is bang on, all my racks are greased.
Undo the clamps and remove the boots and clean them out.
Check ball loading, it should just hold arm still with track rod end fitted and check end bush lift.
(Smacka usually has bushes and ball/cup kits if needed).
Hang the rack up and put a container under it to catch the oil.
Put the rack on full lock and grease the rack teeth then repeat on the other lock.
Remove the pinion bolts and damper plate (depending on rack type Burman or Camgear) and slap some grease around in there.
refit boots, the rack will last as long as one of your finest paint jobs (possibly longer than me and you LOL)
