toyota w gearbox behind ford I4
Hey fellas just wanting to know the conversion process for a toyota gearbox behind a kent, pinto, zetec etc. I understand they have a 21 spline input and 21 out, wheras the ford gearboxes have 23 spline in. So do i just find a suitable clutch to suit?

I will be using the Pinto / Zetec pressure plate and I'm assuming I will have either a custom friction disc or I'm not sure if there is ano off the shelf equivalent to suit the Toyota input shaft.

My kit used an Escort Pressure plate and thrust bearing, with a Toyota friction plate for my Steel Case behind the Pinto. Make sure you get the Toyota friction plate machined down to the same diameter exactly as the pressure plate surface, as an imperial 8" and a metric 8" are NOT the same... (You would find it does work, but the tollerances make it so that it can and does then break everything in the clutch system over time !!!) Other than that my conversion used a Dellow belhousing with a shortend / modified tailshaft and a new modified speedo cable with a Ford upper end and a Toyota bottom end..... I also used a Corona T drive adaptor that turns the speedo drive approx 90 where it bolts onto the gearbox as the extractors are relatively close and it saves melting the custom cable... Oh - and most important - DONT forget to put the Dellow adaptor in for the spigot bearing after soaking it in light machine oil overnight (and removing the old one of course...) An a custom crossmenber for the auto tunnel... I highly reccomend the Steel Case as it is a nicer box than the T9 ford one I have in another Escort, but it will need a few custom bits that you need to either make or source... Dellow do have a great service though so even if you live in Melb like me, any replacement part only take a day or two to arrive after ordering, and they have always had them in stock when I needed in the past...
Just my 2.2c worth including GST....

Ive never done this conversion but i do have a celica gearbox/dellow bellhousing to suit a ford 2litre amongst the bits there somewhere. I was under the assumption you would first try by using use the ford flywheel, and the rest (clutch plate, pressure plate etc) would be toyota. Just making sure the clutch size matched the size of the flywheel. Im assuming when they make the bellhousing they also take into account the correct gap between clutch/flywheel so it works? Sorry cant be much more help than that.

try talking to Castlemain Rod Shop, they used to do kits for this conversion with everything you need. Not sure if they still do them but its worth a shot

Nick, Do you have any photos of the 90 deg adaptor? After running the new exhaust I can no longer fit the old cable and this would solve my problems? Which model corona should I be looking for. Thanks, Shaun

CRS don't do the celica 5 speed conversion for Escorts anymore. Dellow is your best bet. Cheers Matt

Kent runs a smaller dia clutch, so I hade to get a plate made up (cant just recall the dia). run with std GT pressure plate and bearing. need to make up a bush with toyota spigot dia hole and escort spigot Dia outside to fit the crank bearing, or buy the one from delow. Pinto I have never done. zetec 1, Flywheel machined to take pinto clutch pressure plate. run std pressure plate and bearing for escort pinto with lite ace clutch plate (I did put a post with part number on old forum) and use 2.0 clutch spacer on arm pivot. Zetec 2, std zetec solid mass flywheel. use focus or mondeo solid mass pressure plate, lite ace centre plate and escort thrust bearing, again you will need to to use a bush on the spigot or the delow spigot bearing.

oops, also needs the 2.0 spacer on pivot in zetec2. Found the orignal details; Toyota townace KR42 1.8 engine from 01/96 on 215mm dia with 21 tooth spline and 29mm dia input shaft. Exceedy H/Duty part number TYD034U. Spigot bearing spacer 15mm od 12mm id 15mm long The release bearing I used was an NSK 24TK 30882V3. std escort 1.3 clutch arm and carrier. There are a few different bearings fitted to escorts it depends on the carrier housing, I just used what I had laying around the shed, shouldnt be to hard to match a carrier with an arm.

Working on some zip engine mounts for faster change No Peter staying with zetec, got sick of looking at Kierans tail lights at Wakefield again, so out with the 1.8 and we in with a 2.0. If that doesnt work I will dust off the Duratec fitting kit and find a 2.3
