Car won't start!
Hi Guys, I went to start the car today to go wash it for the RSOCVIC Concourse tomorrow but the f'n thing won't start. For some reason there is no spark coming from the coil. There is power to "-" & "+" on the coil with the ignition on but there is no spark coming from the coil to the dizzy. I tried ground the HT lead from the dizzy but no spark at all. I swaped coils as I had another one but the same thing happens. Car cranks over no probs but just won't even fire or grab a little bit. What other things can i check as at this stage it won't be coming along tomorrow? Cheers, Matt

I checked that. When I put the test light on the points it lights up so power is getting there.

hey, is it points or electronic dizzy, this happened me with the points dizzy it ended up being the points condenser, took me ages to figure it out.

It has points.
The consensor is only 2 weeks old.

If power to the points (ing on, do you get a spark when you flick them open?), then remove coil lead from centre of cap and see if you get a sprark when cranking. If no spark, replace coil lead. If spark from coil lead but no spark from plug lead, chack carbon bush is still there in centre of dizzy cap (contacts rotor) and also check the rotor button.

Hi jimmy, maybe it's the coil ht lead as the rotor button is good as is the cap.

Hi Guys, Just revisiting this. Got the new maifold back on so now it's time to get it going again. Had a little play today and I think it may be the condensor. I get 12v to coil each side and to the points. I checked the ground in the dizzy and that's fine to. 9V when cranking for both. I get 12v out the top of the coil and 9v when cranking it over but I get nothing out of the spark plug end of the dizzy leads. Voltmeter says 0. I measured the resitance of the coil and I get 0 ohms when I test from the + to - but get 18.7ohms from either the + or - when connected to the HT Lead. So I am unsure whether it's the coil or condensor. Any ideas? Cheers, matt

If you actually get 0 ohms then the coil is dead. If its a dick smith spec meter the resistance is probably too low for it

I get 12v either side of the coil. The lead won't spark on the block so I am pretty sure the coil is gone. Matt

matt, escorts should be covered in dust and play in the mud, not be cleaned lol Low voltage side: with ignition on you will have 12v at the +ve. With points open you will have 12v at the coil -ve and at the points wire. with points closed the coil -ve and points will be 0v as they are earthed out through the points. If your points are closed and you still have 12v both side, then points are dirty/stuffed and not earthing. The condensors function is to reduce spark across the points extending point life. disconnect it for fault finding, the car will run without it for the duartion of fault finding without burning points. High voltage: When you open points the coil will discharge and produce your spark. Hold your coil lead near (2-3mm gap) to bare metal, usually a bolt head. Turning over the motor or opening and closing points should generate a spark. more likely if you washed it, the dissy took a gob full of water. Is there moisture on the inside of the cap ??

Hey Mate, I get what you are saying. I have tried grounding the coil lead to the block and I get no spark jumping which leads me to thinking it's the coil. The dizzy cap is fine and looks almost brand new. I am thinking of getting one of those accuspark dealies so I will get a new coil at the same time too so replacing everything should sort it out. Cheers Matt Cheers, Matt
