Accent WHERE TO ATTACH DIAGNOSTIC TOOL

Ford MK3
 my engine check light stays on, blinks, car stalls then same thing until warmed up. when i put it in gear it just sits there, about five minutes until warmed up, and doesn't shift easily when going uphill (automatic trans). where do i attach the diagnostic tool to check the problem(s)? What about the the owners manual doesn't show a place.
