Hi beam - flash working, constant not. ??

Hi all.
I have a prob with Hi beam.
I thought before i spend hours chasing i would see if anyone else came accross it.

I can flash my high beem ok but in the constant on position - nothing. (so bulbs are ok)
I have swapped switches and it still happens so it's not the switch.
Any ideas??

Thanks.
Darren.

I had this same issue and it was the switch.

You could try to bridge the connections to see if it is the switch.

Maybe also check fuses, ground wires OK.

    Got to love electrical problems!

I could try i guess but seems odd 2 switches would do the same thing.
Surely the flash/constant hi beam are not on seperate fuse circuits??

The only inline fuse i know of is under the dash for the demister – that fuse is ok and the demister works. Although i have interrupted the wiring there a little to replace the stock switch. As far as i can see from the circuit diagram these are not linked.

The prob i have is not reading the circuit diagram as such but understanding the convoluted switches!!!

The contacts on the switches usually melt over time because high beams are higher wattage lamps and don't have a relay.
It is possible to have two switches do the same thing. As they are 30 old years old.

    Ok - does make sense.
I counted out the switches since when i took mine out all those years ago i never had the problem even with 100w high's. The one i put back in i have modified for right side. Didn't notice anything unusual when i had it apart - twice.
I'll do like matt said and short the switch and see what happens.
    Thanks Matt n knightime.

I had this with a Hillman Hunter it was the stalk.  Escorts (MK1)  use the same stalk as the Hunter.  swap over the stalk, then swap the switch it will be one of the 2

Capri The car I always promised myself

check this with your low beams on. i was checking my lights one day, and was wondering why they only flashed. then i realised you need the low beams on. embarrasing, but easily overlooked.

Check the fuses, I has the sme drama after the car sat for a few weeks. Fuses were in place but not making electrical contact.
It was weird because combinations of lights were working which I didn't think would have separate fuses. Easy to check with a jumper of wire.

    ok I got it working.
Funny thing - this sounds a bit odd but I figured it out by reading the circuit diagram so I'm guessing its meant to be this way.
U need the ignition on to flash.
    wierd.
You can have hight beam without ignition but need ignition to flash

Yeah it doesn't make sense to me but i tested the switch with the meter and it was working. So I started drawing my on diag by folloing the circuit diag for the car and realised the power for the flash was coming not from the headlight wiring but from the ignition wirings.
So I checked and sure enough - the flash worked with ignition on.
    Very strange.
    I should change it
