Clutch query for a 2.0L pinto transplant

Hey guys,

I'm tackling the clutch component of the engine while its at the shop, and i've gone to Auto1 for a clutch kit. The thrust race on the hub is measuring 36mm, whcih they tell me is an RS2000 clutch.....

I was hoping it would be a 45mm thrust race as this is the "australian escort" clutch kit, and has a very reasonably priced 'heavier' duty kit...

Ultimately, my query:
- is it possible to run a 45mm thrust race if the appropriate hub was sourced and inserted into the fork
- is it worth the effort, or will the stock RS2000 kit be enough for this build.

It didn't specify the clamp load for the RS2000, however the Australian Escort listing (45mm) had a heavier duty clutch with a 650kg load (40% increase).

Note: the engine isn't too hot, its been fully reconditioned, however future plans of around 150bhp are desired.

Thanks in advance,

Tim

Regards,

Tim

I would suggest the difference is actually more to do with the style of bearing which relates to the style of fingers used on the diaphragm.

standard type has straight fingers on the diaphragm and these must use the original cast throw out bearing carrier where the bearing is pressed onto the carrier

The other type has curved ends on the diaphragm and needs the throw out bearing in a plastic carrier where the carrier is part of the bearing.

Either one can be used but they are not to be mixed up if that makes sense.  The image below is the second type mentioned.

For the record, what brand of clutch were they quoting as this will help me narrow down the differences.

Not sure about the bearing in a plastic carrier which is part of the bearing.... but there are 2 different types of clutch pressure plates and thrust bearings - which cannot be mixed... If your diaphram fingers are essentially straight you need the thrust bearing that has a 'ridge' on it to make the extra distance. If you diaphram fingers are curverd in the centre then the matching bearing has no ridge and the mating face is almost flatish.. I have mixed 2 non matching flat bits and you cannot disengage the clutch. Using the dished non matched pair is likely to do something the opposite and damage or break bits. Both types of thust bearing fit on the standard Ford thrust bearing carrier....

Just my 2.2c worth including GST....

Thats right, either 'kit' can be used but you cant mix them up.  Kind of doesnt matter when buying a new clutch kit as it will have the correct bearing with it.

Many moons ago I fried the original clutch on the RS2000 in the middle of nowhere and could only get the flat diaphram HD Aus kit at the local Repco store. It did fit, but had to back off the clutch cable adjustment substantially so as not to overstroke the pressure plate and the mongrel would lift off pressure from around 4,500 - 5,000 an slip like a bitch. Assuming it was a faulty kit I pulled it and got a replacement (seriously not a fun exercise is 40 degree heat crawling around in the dirt with the car straddling a drainage ditch...) - same issue. Ditched it 2,000klms later when I got home and ordered a Daikin HD raised diaphram clutch - cluch cable adjustment back to normal with no overstroke issues and no pressure lift off at revs.

My understanding at the time from talking to the Daikin tech boys was that the diffrerent pivot points on the raised diaphram version provides a softer pedal for a given clamp pressure while reducing centrifugal lift off at higher RPM - sounds feasable but I am not a clutch specialist so had to take it at face value.

    Cheers

Hey guys thank you all for the in depth replies. I have gone and bought a clutch kit reflective of the kit i pulled off the motor. Thanks again for the input
