I don't know how bad the damage is but I do know there is water coming in.

Looking into the bubble from the top or bottom I can't spot any rust. (A few dried leaves though)

Mine leaked with zero rust. It was due to cracking of the original ( I presume) sealant around the cylindrical water deflector.

They're the people selling the section for the bottom of the heater bowl.

Just reading back through some old posts regarding heater bubbles, and was interested in this.

Is the panel spoken about above the same as the one smcka does?.

I was planning to use riv-nuts or nut-serts or whatever they are called until the panel beater I spoke with said it is better to bond it permanently as it provides structural strength (which definitely wouldn't go astray in a car as flexible as an Escort).  When I said I was concerned about keeping it clean in there to prevent the rust returning he just said to use POR or KBS on the inside, and hose it out regularly.

Whats POR or KBS? :)

Also - does anyone have any pointers to getting a plenum bowl off, thats still in really good condition?. Has anyone done this before?.

Oddly enough, my plenum bubble itself is in perfect condition, but underneath it is rusted through into the car so i need to remove it, put a patch in, and then reattach it.

Anyone got any pointers / photos?.

Sorry, when I wrote POR I meant POR-15 paint, which is supposedly a super-rust preventative.  KBS is a similar product that is Au made.  See:

Ford fu*ked up big time in the design of the plenum chamber of the escort as we all know!Reason being that the drain hole for it sits about 8mm above the plenum floor,so the water was trapped below the bottom of the drain hole, causing the plenum floor, bubble and top of firewall panel to corrode and rust out. As a result, water enters the interior and soaks into the carpet . Result... floors then start to rust out.
A removable bubble is a good idea, but it wont look original, which in some cases will be an issue. When I removed the bubble on my RS2000,I rebuilt the floor of the plenum chamber welding in new metal , the bubble itself was good so all I done was cut out that 8 mm base of the drain hole so no water could collect ever again.I re welded the bubble back on again as original and fitted the drain pipe as normal.Drain pipe still fits as most of the circle of the hole remains, but any water that enters the plenum drains out below it. Problem solved. It also give you enough room to remove leaves and crap( when pipe is removed)
Hope this helps.
Regards,
Liam
