Brake Caliper Painting

Similar to a thread here  http://www.classic-ford.o.../tm.aspx?m=50426  I'm looking at painting my calipers.

I've been looking at the VHT and 3M stuff but can't seem to locate the clear finish in order to give it a gloss effect.

Anyway there's a bloke that does a lot of work restoring callipers for a brake shop next door to him and he's offered to sandblast and paint my calipers in two pack.

Here's the two pack he's going to use

I asked and said is it heat proof, to which he replied, no, but he said he's used it plenty of times before and no one has returned them.

Although VHT make a heat proof caliper paint, just how heat proof does two pack need to be for items like calipers?

Also, when prepping the AP's I'd like to remove the piping between the two halves. However before I undo them I've noticed
1) Theres some blue gunk in the connectors that looks like a sealant, and
2) Theres a silicone type of compound between the pipe and caliper, which I'm assuming is to stop the pipe from virbating against the caliper

See below

Although it would be easier to leave the piping, the paint won't stick to the silicon. Whats is the sealing agent used in the connector and what type of silicone is used?

Cheers

    Hey nathan.
I think the blue may be loktite as a guess.
On the pipe is it soft like silicone? I imagine like u it is to stop the pipe vibrating and fatiguing but i would worry if silicone would stand up to heat if the calipers got significantly hot!!??
There is more than just VHT caliper paint isnt there? Sure mine wasnt. (from supercheap)
    Sorry cant be more help.

Were the calipers like that when you got them (no colour) or have you had them blasted already? I am going to paint mine as well, i have VHT spray paint from Repco. What calipers are they? I can see CP5000 on them? do you have brake pads as well? If so can you post a pic of them and maybe some measurements of them, i ask as i have a set of Pads and they wont fit my Calipers when i bought them they said they were for a 5000 type of caliper, I just want to see what ones they fit so i can sell them on.
    Thanks.

2pac is very heat resistant and the calliper would have to be extremely hot for the paint to burn off, you more likely than not would have lost your brakes by then.
The blue is loctite thread retaining compound on the threads of the pipe. AP use this on all of their callipers from memory/experience.
The silicone on the pipe is to stop vibration and fracturing (in extreme cases) of the brake pipe.
    Hope that helps.
    Cheers

    Thanks guys!

Ozzie Cossie; The calipers came that way. Apparently it has an anodized finish. They are definately 5040 series calipers. I ordered some Ferodo DS 3000 from Burton's that said they were the correct fit. They'll arrive next week and I'll let you know. Where'd you get yours from? Ferodo part number is meant to be FRP 216 and AP Racing part number is meant to be CP3215D50. That's what it said on the Burton's site! We'll see..

Craig; Thanks for that. I note the blue stuff is around the collar of the nut and pipe, not the actual thread. Different? The bleed nipples and pad bracket screws had a thread sealant of some type, what type? It seemed white.

What type of silicone would need to be used as the protection?

I've seen some two-pack blister under bonnets before. Would that more than likely be from dodgy surface prep and mixing rather than two-pack problems? If two-packs ok then I'll just get this guy to paint them as he'll be sandblasting the R31 rear calipers I'll be using and painting them as well. Good for a uniform look.

    Other hints people?

    Cheers

Not an expert Nathan but if your question is how to get it out - heat it up. Try a heat gun and if that doesn't work you may have to use a little torch. I had to to get my sump studs out that i put in with loctite.
As for getting some - coventreys i'm pretty sure have it - there are different ones for different purposes so look up wich one is for your application. (glueing, sealing, thread lock stuff)
