Cutting front guards for wheel clearance
hey guys, im unhappy with how little castor i am able to get before my 15's touch the front half of my front guards, not so much an issue with my silly little 13's but they offer little to no grip as ive found out (the hard way), just wondering how people have gone about this in the past, as im pretty sure a few people on here have done it. Would prefer to do it once and neatly as i dont have the want to paint the front of my car again. here is a picture of my planned cut line, feel free to comment on too much or too little if anyone has done this and has good pictures of finished product it would be very helpful cheers Zac

I think the setup really needs more castor, car gets wobbly at high speed, steering wheel doesnt self correct quickly or at all. and i dont think a tyre such as a wanli will offer much in the way of traction, will be as bad as my sumotomos that are stretched over my 8's

Add more castor through some goog strut tops from Eurospeed. If its steering wobble that would be wheel balance?? More castor will be more stable.

i currently have a set of adjustable strut tops in the car, but being a late mk2 its a small hole, i have partly overcome this by slotting the mounting holes getting some more castor/camber out of it (have slotted on diagonal) reasons for cutting from are i am still running a std front sway bar, im currently looking into a thicker adjustable bar, and as the wheels already touch with the current setup im not liking my chances with more castor. by the term wobbly i ment not stable, tends to veir all over the road and reacts to surface changes greatly, not fun at high speed

My suggestion would be to start small with the cuts. You shouldn't have too much trouble cutting that area for clearance. You'll also have to cut and shape the bottom of the front panel back towards the inner wing as that's what I found after fitting my arches.

I had the same drama with the rally car had to cut a fair bit away from memory and even the back of the arch has gotten a work out so im going to put arches on instead

Fordsy, thanks for the tip, as the the lower section that's what the mex spoiler is there for, hide all the crappiness, MATTJ, did you just cut the guard out and leave the sharp edge or did u replicate the std arch and put a lip back on?? if that makes any sence, also do you have any pictures.

Rather than cutting the exterior body and making it look like an odd shaped abortion how about putting the wheel centred to the arch and modify the strut top to get the desired caster would look beter an shouldnt be too hard. Jp

I was running a car yard when I built my car and had the panel beater we were using cut and reshape the front gaurds for me. You'd be hard pressed to pick it as not being factory. It's too cold and wet to walk down to the shed tonight, attached is the best photo I could find on my computer.

I has to do a similar mod to the front lip of my guards on the autocross car. The front spoiler makes it slightly worse for clearance too. I took a triangle off the spoiler about 40mm along the bottom and about 120mm up the side fom memory. Then trimmd the panel underneath to suit, bending in a small lip with pliers to give it back some strength.... Sorry i cannot take any photo as i am flat on my back in hostpital atm...

I think you will find that the amount of scraping is a factor of a number of things, such as tire width, wheel offset and adjustable front sway bar. My 15's on the race car just nick the front spoiler, but i have had 13's scrape quite badly. The 14's i used to use on the autocross car were particularly bad as the ooverall tire diametre was larger too. To get more castor without having to cut or fold the guards, try spme adjustable strut tops where you move the top of the strut backwards- instead of an adjustable swaybar (or machined swaybar end) to move the bottom of the strut forwards. Standard Ghia wheels with 205/60/13 just tip a front spoiler with everything standard... so you do not have much roon to lay with - especially if you have wheels with more dish or offset which will pushhl the tyres further forward at partial lock.
