The "1600 Sport" decals lookd to be non-original. Before laser cutters or whatever they use now came along you had to get your local pinstriper to hand cut out the lettering - with varied results - which looks liek what this car has. Here's a pretty original looking NZ Escort Sport for reference. Hmmm with the Aus/NZ $ ratio the way it is... and pre 1988 so less import dramas...hmmm http://www.trademe.co.nz/.../auction-478366874.htm

VIN tag on slam panel not inner wing. Side fuel tank with no cut out in the rear for drop tank. No aerial hole in passenger side wing. Door cards only go part way up the door. Looks like a foreigner to me.

another thing, is that the strut tops have the reinforcement plates, to my knowledge this is a local thing that was done as my gen 1600 sport does not have this

Spot on Fordsy, Also don't forget the radiator support panel. The aussie cars didn't have the large radius on the extreme end of the panel.

that car was a genuine 1600 sport from south africa.. check my previous link and this one.. its not a mock up car, these cars came standard with all the details you all mentioned. the fuel tanks were mounted in the boot as per the Mexico, mexico mirrors similar interior to that of a mexico. only difference was these never came with a over head cam 1600 pinto engine and they never came standard with a boot spoiler! http://johannesburg.gumtr...geImage?AdId=378352312

I agree the fire damaged mk2 is an import, I suspect it from uk only by noticing the fuel cap which has a black centre, other things are there's no tower strength plates (RS/MEX) only. The closest thing we had to a 1600sport was the 'Escapee' back in '76/'77, white with matt black bonnet and yellow/red stripes.

you'd be better off importing one from SA yourself rather than paying for basically a set of tags, some crispy parts and a local shell to put them into.
