new speedo cable, speedo not working?

My speedo doesn't work with the new cable. It's the right part, bought from yesterford. I have it installed right, (located properly into the back of cluster, used the ciclip underneath) My guess is that the needle part that inserts into the gearbox is the problem, it didn't protrude from the shroud by much when I pushed it in. Car is MK1 escort, MK2 4 speed gearbox. Any help would be great thanks

Does the cable turn when you drivve the car? (remove dash, disconnect and check it whilst driving)

If it's not, then the problem is inside the box, or with the drive at the box end.  If it turns the problem will be in the speedo head.  Depending on what car you have I more than likely have a spare speedo head.

Just adding to what Wozzah has said, if the speedo cable does turn just check the speedo by hand by turning it at the back.

Sometimes it is possible for the cable not to couple with the back of the speedo as the inner of the cable can get pushed back.

    Appologies for the poor explanation.

    Cheers,

So, I was lazy and never got around to checking the cable when disconnected from the cluster.
The gearbox is out of the car now. I looked in the haynes manual, there's no troubleshooting (i could see) for the speedo.
Are there any checks i can do with the gearbox out???  I suspect it's the gearbox because the speedo worked fine with the BW35 that was in there previously.

When I ought my car the chick said ther speedo was busted and hadn't worked for years.

I had a look at it and just pushed the cable in harder and it worked no probs.

    Cheers,

The gearbox speedo drive had an old cable tip snapped off inside it. I picked it out with a jewellers screwdriver. All good now
    Cheers
