The pic is a little blurry but is it 12v to both points and then coil -ve to the other.

Does it need a ground?

Yes, from  left to right 12v-,12V+ and Coil -ve

12v- is what threw me.  I know just enough to get myself into trouble but not enough to get out of it.

All sorted! It ended up being a bad earth.

All works great and revs clean to 6k.
