V6 Capri two piece tail shaft overhaul
Hi, I'm looking to rebuild the two piece tails haft for my 72 v6 Capri. The CV/velocity joint is very worn with wear grooves in the housing itself. I'm having trouble finding a replacement part. Appreciate any advice re location of replacement cv joint or alternative cv joint that can be used. Thanks

Some Escorts came with two-piece shafts too, but as the way the universal joints were fitted made it difficult or impossible to replace, it is common to replace the whole thing with a one-piece shaft. If you have no luck repairing yours, you may wish to consider this option.

If your talking about the centre joint of the two piece propshaft, you'll be needing a new propshaft centre bearing and rubber. If these have been worn for a while, it's not unusual that the housing has some grooves, as it's probably been slapping around for a while. If it's not a concours rebuild, most people swap these for a custom made one piece unit. If you want to rebuild as original, you could fill the worn grooves in the housing by welding then grinding/filing back to normal profile, then replace the bearing and rubber with new items from either www.burtonpower.com or try ebay UK. ebay UK may also have someone selling a good 2nd hand housing, or someone here may have one kicking around after they have changed to a one piece propshaft. You could also try www.capriclinic.com which is based in Perth. Good luck Jamie

When I did the engine swap in my car the two piece shaft was condemned in the road worthy inspection, all of the uni joint bearings were what they called staked bearings i.e. welded in. The co. who were given the shaft to fix claimed they could no get the parts (proper size universal joints & center bearing & the rubber ) off the shelf from normal suppliers. They used parts available & built a custom shaft & delivered it in a couple of days at a reasonable price . The argument was that it would cost as much to redo the old shaft as it would to make a new one, and most people given the option will replace the two piece shaft with a single any way to aviod the complication of the center bearing. I think all the parts for the two piece are available in the UK from Burtons or Ebay So depending where you are I have a spare two piece shaft if you want it.

Thanks your responses. I am completing a near concourse standard resto so trying to keep the two piece if I can. I can source the bearing and rubber from Hardy Spicer in Aust or Burtons in the UK. The CV seems to be the problem part to replace.
I'm going to try to find some one to fill the grooves etc if it's feasible. A one piece is certainly a logical choice which I may need to go with if all other attempts fail.

☄ Helpful
Measure your current CV joint bearing if you have the propshaft apart. I have a two piece propshaft here which I'll pull apart tomorrow and check, but the CV bearing itself measures approx. 94mm OD, and 78mm PCD of the bolt holes. If it measures up at 32mm thick with 33 splines, then I think I've found a possible replacement CV bearing and possibly a replacement boot also. The CV joint bearing in the spare propshaft I have here is made by LOBRO (made in W.Germany 10/85), which must have been a replacement at some stage. The number stamped on it is 7153 10 01 88026, but that doesn't seem to work in searches. GKN now make the LOBRO style CV, but this number isn't in their catalogues. I'll check the size tomorrow and see if it matches what I've found. Cheers Jamie

That's a promising lead thanks Jamie. I don't have the CV joint at my house but I'll get the measurements of it to compare to yours. The internal ball bearing unit has some wear but it's the housing that seems to wear more. The internal boot is also split but I imagine you can install one on the outside of the cv joint to create a seal.
The staked uni's are another story altogether however mine don't appear to need replacing at this point.

I've been trying to upload pictures of what I have here, but not having much luck. The CV joint bearing in the propshaft I have here is remarkably close to GKN part number MS3J001, but the number of teeth/splines appears to be the only difference. The GKN MS6J002 boot is what would be used with CV bearings of this size. The first link is a GKN motorsport catalogue, and the second is a UK based seller that lists the parts. It may be a matter of finding a GKN reseller, and getting them to match up the capri CV with something in the current product line. Cheers Jamie http://www.ks-motorsport.de/de/pdf/MotorSport_GB_03.pdf http://www.raceparts.co.uk/products/drive_train.asp?section=GKN+CV+Joints

Thanks for the links. I've checked them out. My velocity/cv joint has a 94 & 90 OD, a PCD of 78mm, is 32 wide however my shaft has 23 splines as opposed to 33. Not sure why this is the case. The tailshaft has the same factory paint markings as the shaft in my other 72 V6 so it's a mystery to me. The MS3J001 parts looks spot on except for the number of teeth on the spline. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

My tail shaft is different. It has green stripe and two orange stripes as well as a yellow dot. It matches the shaft I have on my running Capri which doesn't appear to have been repainted at any time.
I don't recognise the shaft in your pictures. Did you pull it off a car you knew?

It came with a bunch of capri parts I got hold of, so there may be a chance it was off another Ford or later Capri, but I was told it was Capri. There are a few different 2 piece shaft setups, including one with a centre uni joint rather than a CV. I'd be interested in some photos of what you have there.

I have a tail shaft which I believe came off a 4 cyl that I wrecked years ago which has the thrird uni in the middle in place of the CV joint. It has different colour factory paint markings to the two tailshafts that I have. Not sure how to upload photos but will work it out and post some tonight hopefully. I'm chasing up Hardy Spicer re the GKN brand CV's which they apparently sell. Cheers

No luck with uploading photos. The home computer died whilst starting so off to buy a new one plus retrieve hard drive contents which includes all my Capri resto files and info. Bugger!
