I'd love some help with mine too!
2L from cortina I think, but it has a sideways "7" stamped -I don't know if I include both "7"s or just the correctly aligned one.....

OK.

So I want to find out what year my Pinto blocks were cast for a pre ADR 1972 Mk1 Escort, and after scouring the web for a few hours the best lead I found is this:

http://www.fordcapriforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=32460#p214389

Three of the Pinto blocks I have are cast with codes in the same location, albeit differing in their values. So far, I've been able to establish that I have 2 x 1979 blocks (which means pollution equipment required...bad) but my German (EB) block has 8J72 as the code, so as far as I'm concerned, it was cast October 8, 1972 (no pollution equipment required...good). Interestingly, the remaining 2 blocks I have tucked away have no casting whatsoever in this location which just adds another layer of confusion. Does anyone have any information they can add with regards to the claim in the link I have provided above?

With regards to the above discussion where people are deciphering the engine numbers stamped into the blocks, I have been unable to find a listing indicating what each of the code elements (CK; XE etc...) means in order to decipher the engine numbers in a similar manner. Does anyone have such a listing?

Thanks.

Ratta tat tat, that'd be:
C = Australia (UK source)
G = Broadmeadows, Victoria assembly plant ( a 'K' here would mean Homebush, NSW
56 = Cortina GL Sedan (4-cyl)
X = 1980
D (not O) = July
*****R = Sequential Vehicle Number (as issued on the line)
Cheers, Terry

Rox, yours reads:
C = Australia (UK Sourced)
G = Broadmeadows
57 = Cortina Ghia 4-cyl (XLE)
The sideways 7 has been overwritten the correct way, so only one 7 here!
U = 1978
A = November
76311R = Sequential Vehicle number

Ross157, yours reads:
C = Australia (UK Sourced)
G = Broadmeadows
65 = ??? Probably a Cortina but I don't have a 65 in my collection of numbers!
S = 1976
C = May
10495P = Sequential Vehicle Number

Thanks ford3000gt. Your information was very useful. So much so that I think I have nutted this out.

For anyone else interested in identifying their Pinto blocks, this is how it's done. Sources for this information were gathered from the following links. I have simply consolidated what I have found.

http://www.fordaustraliaforums.com/forum/showthread.php?28968-vin-number-rs2000&p=265249&viewfull=1#post265249
http://www.burtonpower.com/tuning-guides/tuning-guide-pages/ford-manufacture-dates.html
http://www.classic-ford.o...9558&mpage=2#69539
http://www.fordcapriforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=32460#p214389

The information in the 1st link is listed below verbatim.

The grid below it I created myself by consolidating the information in the 2nd and 3rd links.

The 4th link details how the date that the block was cast can be determined.

Pinto engines were available beyond 1981 in Australia but I have been unable to find any information of the codes used beyond 1981 so I have not speculated on their values and have not included them in the grid. Anyone knowing this information please let me know and I will update this post.
(Thanks to ford300gt - ...not just for Pinto engines/Escorts or Cortinas, the same works for Capris, using Kent  and Essex engines, but only from around the middle of 1970....  The whole thing changed again in 1981 when we went to the 17 digit VIN, universally used around the world from 1 January, 1981. Cheers, Terry)

Hope that all makes sense.

Anyway...

PINTO ENGINE NUMBER DECODING

As a Pinto shares its I.D. number with the vehicle's chassis number, these will work fine:

The VIN on the engine or car will be 6 characters long, for example, JG63UM or AL1JYM. These are decoded as follows;

First character = Product source.
A = USA, C = UK, J = Australia and S = Japan. Am not sure what U is, could be Thailand, Korea or the likes. At any rate, this code shows up for the Laser’s, Meteor’s and Telstar’s.

Second character = Assembly plant.
G = Broadmeadows - (Passenger), L = Broadmeadows – (Truck), H = Brisbane and K = Sydney

3rd & 4th characters = Body Series
See below

5th & 6th characters = year and month of production respectively. These do not always work for the Escort's in regards to the month. (Refer to grid below)

Therefore;
A = USA source
L = Assembled at Broadmeadows Truck plant
1J = F100 4x2
Y = 1981
M = March

Typically, most A and C sourced cars came in the form of parts manufactured overseas and then fully assembled here in Australia e.g. F Series, Escorts & Cortina’s.

The complete list of Body Series codes are shown below.
1C = Transit 125 End/Side Load Van
1D = Transit Sundowner Van

2C = Transit 125 Kombi
2D = Transit 175 Side Load Van

PINTO CAST DATE

If you look at the top left of the block is some numbers and letters in a rectangle...

16 K 79
16 th day
K = November (A= jan , B= feb etc)
79 means 1979

On a final note I wish to point out 2 things that have come to light during this exercise.

Firstly, not all Pinto blocks have the cast date in the top left hand corner. I have 2 such blocks. Why this is so, I do not know. Can anyone shed light on this?

Secondly, the cast date in the top left hand corner is obviously going to be earlier than the date stamped as the engine number which is determined during the assembly of the vehicle. For example, I have a block with a cast date of 8J72 which translates to October 8, 1972, yet the engine number stamped into the block begins with CK55NC which translates to:

C = UK source
K = Assembled at Sydney
55 = Cortina GL Sedan Bucket Seat (Taxi). (CK/CG build)
N = 1973
C = September

Now I know the history of this block as I owned the baby blue TC Cortina it came out of many, many years ago, and the car had a build date of 1973, 11 months after the block was cast. Had the 2 dates been advance by 3 years, and the block was cast in in October 1975 but the engine number indicated a build date of September 1976, then this block would need to comply with ADR27a meaning standard carby, pollution gear and all that other crap instead of hot cam, twin Webers etc... The chances of blocks with dates crossing over into ADR27a are not only likely, but would have to be an absolute. Such blocks do/did exist. So when selecting your blocks for pre ADR27a use, make sure you use the engine number as date of the block, as this will be what your local RTA will use to establish compliance.

I have done my best to insure that the information provided here is as accurate as I could find. Should anyone have information to the contrary, or is able to add any additional detail to what I have been provided, please feel free to do so.

Chuff, of course this science is not just for Pinto engines/Escorts or Cortinas, the same works for Capris, using Kent  and Essex engines, but only from around the middle of 1970?, when Ford started using this system on it's CKD kits imported from the UK. The whole thing changed again in 1981 when we went to the 17 digit VIN, universally used around the world from 1 January, 1981. Cheers, Terry

Thanks. I've updated my post regarding VIN introduction in 1981.

I'm not sure if your "middle of 1970" comment is accurate. I have a block from 1972 that works using this method, so you may be right but it would be earlier than mid 70s.

Sorry ford3000gt. I read that all wrong.
