Straight through exhaust??
Hi All. Just wondering. I would like to run a straght through exhaust. (2.0+, big bore extractors. 2 1/2 system.) Given it is a street car i have to worry about noise. My question is - will 2 straight through mufflers lowwer the noise enogh to get me by. Obviously when i tramp it it will shout a bit. But generally could i get it quiet enough (sort of) with the two resinators or hot dogs or whatever. I don't want it quiet - just not Harley loud. Thanks. Darren.

Pretty much certain it will be too loud. I run a normal muffler under the car with a rear hotdog resonator. Its loud. In fact its coming off and I'm going back to something quieter. I'm getting around 95db in the cabin!

I'm getting around 95db in the cabin! A while back I spoke to a muffler guy and asked what he could do to make my 2.0 quieter. He said the best he could do was the single muffler and resonator combo, which is what I already have. This struck me as odd given that the car came with a large and small muffler when new. I'd be very interested to hear if you successfully tame your exhaust volume and exactly how.

Hi Avon. Been a bit busy with the new house :-( (although its great to have a house finally) Ordered my extractors this week :-) - but i still have to get the sump back off :-( Hmm. Be interested to hear more. It's true i don't want to be too loud - but then ive heard a lot of noise v8's. I just really want the straight through. I thought maybe someone here has done something similar. I had a center in offset out high flow on it's own before but it really wasn't that loud. So i just wondered if i did the two straights if it would drop enough when not under heavy load.

Straight through will be loud you can't change that. Have you thought about a Tri flow muffler?

i had a 2 1/2 inch with 1 large straight through muffler going out the side and it was ear bleeding when cruising and under load, sounded great at idle though. ended up going back to full 2 1/4 with 1 good quality offset muffler at the rear just before the diff. it is still a louder than your average car especially when you put your boot into it, but doesnt give me a headache in 2 minutes.

i have a mk1 2 door with windows at the back that dont open so its legal in south australia provided: Exhaust Outlets
For vehicles manufactured prior to July 1988 the requirements are not specific, however, vehicles submitted to Transport SA will be acceptable if:-
a. The exhaust outlet exits beyond the last door or window opening on the side or rear of the vehicle; b. The exhaust outlet is as close as possible to the outer edge of the vehicle but not outside or underneath the vehicle; c. The exhaust system, if contactable, is adequately shielded and any sharp or hazardous projections are suitably treated. if i got pulled up i reckon the noise would have been way over the limit anyway. good thing i didnt get pulled up.

Hi Gazz. Where did you route the exhaust under the car? Did you modify the chassis rails or just go under them? Did you exit into a 2 1/2" pipe or use a rectangular section exit pipe? I am thinking about a side exhaust for my Mk1 2dr rally car but I am not sure that there is sufficient clearance to make it worthwhile. The car will only be 1-2" lower although will have stiffer springs. Got any pics?

The pretty standard way is the muffler than the hot dog. You could just try the 1 muffler and then see how you go. It's pretty easy to add the on later if need to Cheers Matt

oz, i just went from the extractors to muffler/resonator and used a 45degree elbow straight out under the chassis rail on the drivers side, i have a few photos from when i did it the first time with just a resonator, it was then upgraded to a proper muffler, no room for both, but it was a lot better with the muffler. i just welded a mount on the chassis rail and used some rubber donuts to hold it up. think i put a mount on near the muffler when i changed to that too, cant remember now. it was 2 1/2 inch pipe to the end. my car had 1.5 inch lowering blocks in the back at that stage, and i used to scrap it a bit on sharp driveways etc.. the chassis rail was definately the lowest point, much better clearance with a full system.

Matt75 The pretty standard way is the muffler than the hot dog. You could just try the 1 muffler and then see how you go. Contrary to what I expected, the muffler man told me the resonator reduces noise rather than adds to it.
