It will depend on the application, ie a standard ST170 focus or a retro fit into a escort, but for mine the st170 on carbs using a megajolt ignition system in my escort, there is no real control of the vvt, so its 'off' to start with and 'on' at about 1200 rpm all the way to redline. But from what I understand/been told the vvt is meant to retard slightly at high rpm. The only comment I can offer is under real high load in top gear, there is a flat spot at about 6500, its not apparent anywhere else in other gears. You might even be able to tune out the flat spot with adjustable gears, not real sure. The car is nice and driveable as it is though.
