Great build going on there! Must be happy with the brake setup!! Nice. I've done a similar rebuild (ok no huge brakes) to my suspension and got a set of yokohama a539s and it becomes really apparent how underpowered the whole car is with the std kent! A little tip from a fellow WA escort driver: I know you miught be attached to the old school plates, but trust me, spend the $20 at your local licensing centre and get yourself a new set of the white/blue ones. Having these plates makes you much less attractive to the police - trust me, i've experienced it first hand.... a motorcycle cop pulled me up months ago and was this - - close to giving me a yellow sticker for a number of things. He let me off with a $100 fine (yeh, great guy...) but did say I should get my plates changed, cos the old plates are what attracted him in the first place! Since the plate change I've come across plenty o cops that haven't looked twice at me - maybe it is the new set of superlights and tyres that do it tho ;) Happy scorting! Nick

Cheers Matt! It is always great to have positive feedback Nick, Yeah I do notice that now with the new suspension setup magnifies how very underpowered the engine is but then again what can you expect from a 30yo engine haha... Don't worry thats next on the list of things to do!!! Yeah Im rather fond of the plates but I think the noise and the shiny wheels and bright colour draw enough attention so changing the plate will make little difference hahaha How do you find the A539's? Im not sold on them... They are great for the road but I think the only way to go for racing is semi slicks... Michael P.S. We should go for a cruise some time Nick, it is always great to meet with fellow Escort enthusiast!!

Hi Michael So far im quite happy with the a539s. I haven't pushed the car yet because i still need to get my carby tuned (got a 32/36 off a 2ltr and im still running 2ltr jets - very boggy), but they do seem very grippy, even in the wet! I've never felt so secure in an escort in bad weather! As for racing, I've promised myself to not even consider it until ive got cash for some serious engine/diff/brakes work! I think Racetune do semi-slicks, but if midlandwheels.com stock them (think so) it'd probably be way cheaper landed anyway. One real bonus of the new plates is that it makes your car look like it's just gone over the pits/been re-registered. I guess the best we can do is make sure we are undefectable and remain chummy if we do get pulled over As for a cruise, yeah I would be keen. Gimme a week or so to get my carb issue sorted and my longer wheel studs in, then im all game! Whereabouts are you located? Will it involve beer??? ]

Hey Nick, Haha yeah I would get them from Midland Wheels in the Uk so much cheaper. The A539's are great in the wet I will agree with that. I plan on doing just some hill climbs and sprint events but I think I will have to upgrade the cooling system first (It overheated a little on just a few spirited laps of a local industrial estate) and I am planning to move to a Pinto as thats what was originally in the car. I guess the plates do give that impression of just being re-registered. But I think smiling and generally being polite is the way to escape a sticker haha. Ah Im up in Joondalup, let me know. I need to do my rear wheel studs too but hopefully I will get them out the way this weekend. Have you done much work to your escort? Do you have a build thread? Michael

hey guys yeah ive recently done some work to it actually the build thread is coming soon, next 24hrs I promise! I've just got a heap of work to get out of the way first. keep your eyes peeled! As for cooling system upgrade - I replaced my thermostat (opens at 82c I think) and took my radiatior to a rad shop where they took the tanks off and reemed out the pathways with a set of spike on a bench. It was about 6 years ago so I forget the name of the process - but since then I haven't had any overheating problems, even after spirited laps :) If you're going pinto, maybe you could source a pinto rad instead. wonder if the kent hoses match up to a pinto rad without much drama??

Yeah I had the radiator re-cored a few years back but you get a warm day and a decent thrash and it starts to get a little warm nothing really extreme though but not really an enjoyable temperature. When I move to the pinto I will do it properly and purchase a new radiator with a few more cores Michael

So small update... Forgot to add this last time but I fitted a quick shift from smacka... Could not believe the change it made but I guess that can be expected given the tired worn standard item that it replace.

i put the same quickshift in last year and it has taken a serious beating and is still like new, best investment ive made i think! and in regards to tyres, get federal 595's. you cant get the rsr in 13's (which is a full semi slick) but the 595's are amazing in both wet and dry conditions, and cheap too. cheers, Ben

Hey Ben, Yeah I can assure you that mine is going to take a beating so it's nice to hear that it can take it... Cheers for the advice on the tyres, I might look into them when these wear down a little :) Michael

So small update although not really about the green car... I was recently given for parts and generally whatever I choose the blue car as seen below by a friend who could no-longer keep it for various reasons. It looks a little scruffy and there are a few dents but mostly the shell is fine and free from rust!! I think it is a 1300 but not really sure (don't really know how to differentiate between the 1300 and 1600 without opening it up). It turns over and just needs the fuel system reconnected and I think it will start =) The plan is to probably restore it with everything slightly improved so new dampers and springs (lowered of course) and a slightly worked engine but nothing too major, thats what the little green beast is for!!! Cheers Michael
