Mk1 Escort master cylinder

I'm looking at using this unboosted mk1 master on my car, but after getting the local brake shop to have a look at it they reckon it'll cost about $380 (worst case they said, so I guess it could be less) to sort it and get it working. This is it here, its a bit of a mess looking at the outside. Should I pull it apart and check what the insides are like?

Does that sound about right to people? There are other things that I'd rather spend $380 on, I could even go and get a brand new 120Y master for $120. But my lines are all set up to use this master. For $380 I'd save a bit more and chuck in an aftermarket pedal box!

Or does anyone have a decent unboosted mk1 master cylinder floating about that they're not using

I agree, nearly $400 is right up there.

I get all my masters and calipers stainless sleeved and they will fit a new kit at the same time.

I would wire brush or wheel the outside of the casting, then strip the internals, main thing to look at is how good the piston assembly is. If that is OK it will only need a resleeve and a rubber seal kit.

If you pull the thing down and the insides are not too bad you might even get away with just a light polish with some emery cloth and you can fit the seals yourself, probabaly about a $50 job.

Whats wrong with the one on the car? If its just leaking you could probably just strip and rebuild that one yourself and if it was working until recently it will most likely be in not too bad a condition to start with?

Clean up the outside, pull em apart and have a look, you haven't got anything to lose.....

    Cheers

I'd fit the 120Y master on, if the threads are wrong get them changed to suit....$20ea, or buy a flare tool and do yourself ;] seems the better option imo..
