Indicators not self cancelling

Hi Guys,

There was a thread on this somewhere but I couldn't find it.

Before I go for the Roadworthy I had a mechanic mate have a look at my car and he said that my car needs the indicators to be self canceling when the wheel is turned.

I don't know too many escorts where this actually happens so what have others done?

Has it stopped working because the cam that sits behind the steering wheel hub has worn down or is it the indicator stalk that has worn down.

I am close to getting it on the road and I am beginning to think that the hardest part will be getting a roadie and wading though all the nonsense issues that arise, even though it will just be on a club permit.

Cheers

Matt

It could be either of 2 that is wornout or broken. flick the steering wheel off and have a look if it is one or the other or both. You should be able to operate it with steering wheel off and check its operation. lift the front wheels of the ground and steer that way.

    Good luck

I went for the Roadie last week and was canned on a few things that aren't to bad but the bloody indicators has stopped canceling again so I need to get them fixed.

I took off the steering wheel today and it seems that due to the cheap steering hub I got to go with my new steering wheel it doesn't allow the steering wheel to move down the shaft (he he) enough to have the cam located properly on the canceling mechanism on the indicator switch.

Either this or maybe the steering column hasn't been seated completely in the steering rack so if it were pushed in deeper then maybe it would move the canceling cam to seat it properly?

Any thoughts are appreciated or if you have a different hub I can try.

    Cheers

Put the original steering wheel back on cause your car wont be roadworthy with any aftermarket job. Has to do with the column having to be collapsible and ford making the steering boss the part that collapses.

Crap, I sold it!  It was pretty shagged and probably wouldn;t have passed the roadie either.

The mechanic didn't have an issue with the steering wheel but just the indicators didn't cancel.

Got it sorted.  I just glued then taped some rubber hose onto the cam and now it works fine.

As long as it lasts long enough for the roadie.  That's all I care about.

Next step is to replace the rear g/box seal and then that's all hopefully.

Does the bottom of the steering wheel boss have a hole to accept the canceling ring peg? if not my money is on the peg now being missing, they are only about 3/16 plastic and snap like carrots.

Yes, the boss has the hole and the cancelling dealie is fine.  The hub seemed no quite long enough to center the dealie on the switch on the indicator.

Good job I only bet $5. still as long as your fix lasts longer than the test, thats the important thing.
