Charge warning light.

Hey guys.

In the last month or so the charge light has been staying on, but only very dim, and fades away when I get the revs up, I havnt had a flat battery or low volts of a morning or if it'd left to sit for a couple of days.

Any ideas why?

    There are 2 things that can cause this.
     
    1.  There is a faulty diode in the alternator.
     
    2.  (more than likely the cause) voltage difference between the alternator and the warning light wiring which is a common fault with older cars.
     
    Have someone check your charging voltage, if its down there will be a faulty diode.  If its not then you can either go over all the connections in the wiring loom to rectify the problem, or just put up with it!

    I got the alternator recod not long ago so I doubt is that.

    It's not causing any harm so I'll just put up with it. Idont even notice it when driving.

    Chuck a volt meter on it and give the car a bit of a rev.  My 'roco' alternator did a similar thing and was overcharging, ended up cooking the battery.  I've since put a good second hand bosch in place of the reco Lucas and the voltage sits rock steady at 13.8.  No more cooked batteries.

    My auto electrican hung the guages over my electrics and solved the dim warning light issue by identifying where it was losing power (ie: leakage) - it was in 2-3 different areas and was solved by putting relays into the headlights (a known Escort weakness) and making a couple of better earth's onto the body/motor. I would also get a dim warning light when I had to engage the windscreen wipers.  
     
    I also had a new alternator (about 3 weeks old) die - just cause its new doesn't mean it can't be the problem. Mine was replaced under warranty after they tested it. A sure sign the alternator is dying (it will almost be terminal when it gets to this stage) is when the radio/ dash lights/indicators/headlights etc start to dim - they get progressively worse,.

    Some people make things happen, others watch it happen and others wonder what just happened - which one are you?
