Brake Combination Queries

Hi guys,

Im looking at brakes at the moment for my mk1 duratec project (road registered).
Ive read a few things and weighed all the options and i think i figured it down to the following:

Front:
RX7 Fd calipers w/ made up mounting brackets
BMW E28 284x22mm vented/slotted rotors
Ferrodo DS2500 pads

Rear: (seems a given)
R31 Calipers w/ mounting bracket kit
Audi 100 rotors 245x10mm solid/slotted rotors
Ferrodo DS2500 pads

Now.. my question is what options do i have when it comes to the brake boosters etc? I realise i will have to lose the standard brake booster, and a number of people use a full pedal box, brake bias valves and some even use things like 120y bits and pieces etc..
But how do i work out what master cylinders are required with this setup?

Considering I'm looking to use an RX7 gearbox behind the duratec, which will have a hydraulic clutch.. is a full pedal box the only real logical way?

Any help would be great as I'm great when it comes to mechanical things but when it comes to things like brake ratios etc i don't have much knowledge at all so I'm pretty clueless. If you could let me know what options there are and the best solution would make things so much easier for me to understand etc..

Cheers
Ev

    Hi Ev.
I'm having the identicle combination on my Mk2 RS2000 Zetec project.
Going with the dual master pedal box option will enabe you to make more room in the engine bay which may be at a premium running the Duratec. I'm doing this and running dual 0.625 masters which should provide adequate braking with good feel and not requiring legs like tree trunks to pull it up!
Going by my calculations you can probably run a tandem master and remote booster if so required as the braking ballance should be close to 60/40 front - rear with that combination.

    Cheers

    Hi Paul,
I believe i just bought one of your r31 kits (sent to Robertson NSW).

Im glad someone else (with a bit more knowledge) is about to do the same setup. So I'm on the right path then..
Ive sourced the main parts, listed above mainly from our good friend flea-bay. But it would be great if you could lead me in the right direction as to where I can get the other parts for a decent price as these I'm assuming will need to get from a more specialist company like the ones in the UK or Eurospeed or the few other race car orientated companies in Aus..

If you could even make a list of what i exactly need would be good. And even a few piccies of when you do your conversion so I'm spot on with what I'm getting and doing, as ill be pretty much mimicking what you end up doing i dare say.

Many thanks again your a life saver!

    Hi Ev
    Yes - they're the ones.
Unfortunately you'll probably be a long way ahead of me - have you seen my rebuild thread lately?
All the parts required are off the shelf items available from either local importers or directly from the UK etc.
I'll be making most of mine as I'm a tight **** and just make sure you get some opinions from others regarding the manufacturers and quality of their products (pedal box etc).
I have made custom adapters for the RX7 callipers also so I'm not too sure what you're wanting to do in that respect? You can see them in the beginning of my build thread http://www.classic-ford.org/cfp/tm.aspx?m=8290
Depending on your current position we can maybe sort something out if you need adapters for the RX7 brakes also?
It also has pics of my pedal box which is a modified OEM item - I copied another modified pedal box from the (assumed) UK which I'm less than impressed with (quality wise).

    Very nice!
Not sure if mine will get done, still got a lot of bits and pieces to do. I should really start taking photos and documenting everything.

Just trying to setup brakes, suspension then diff before installing the duratec. Then the final install of everything for when the car gets sprayed etc.

What Peugeot discs did you use? I think id rather those than possibly than the Bmw discs as they don't sit over the hub but behind like escorts ones. Also thinking of using some nice alloy hubs. There the same size so as long as i can get some slotted ones for a reasonable price id probably use them.

    eg:

As far as the brackets, id love a set. Do me a special price because i bought your rear kit as well and we may well have a deal

    Hi Ev
No worries - I will draw something up and see what it will cost to produce it.
It will not be the same one piece alloy as i did but a similar principle in steel - it will be a lot cheaper! I'll draw up my proposal and see what you think.
    Rotors are Pugeot 306 (or even Citroen) DBA275 - 283mm x 27mm.
They will need to be redrilled to suit the 4x92 PCD of the OEM rotor mount on the hub but no biggy :-)

    Cheers

    Hi Ev

I have basically modified my single piece adapter to be made as independant sections - the adapter bracket and a spacer.

If you're interested i can provide you a price to manufacture.

    Paul,

Just a quick question on the rear disc conversion (haven't got to the front yet).. Did it increase the track at all?
Im hoping it won't as my wheels/tyres are pretty tight as it is (though I'm still to roll the inner edge properly so it should be fine as is)..

Note* Tyre in pic just for fitment.. they're directional etc..

I did find one person who did an english axle conversion and when he measured it was basically the same?
    http://www.clubmans.com/westfield/rearbrakes.html

But I've heard elsewhere doing a disc rear adds 10mm track?
Hoping it remains the same, or even decreases it by a touch.

     Any thoughts? Thanks again.

Haha unfortunately living 2hours away from the car, and a very busy job does make it harder than id like. But its all coming along now. Dare say ill start a thread up in the new year.

Actually at present building myself a car trailer so I can cart it around, and also for future track days

    Hi
Unfortunately I think the track is increased slightly - definately not decreased.
What is the thickness of the drum face which the wheel mounts?

    Cheers
