What do you mean 'Been through', snapped, shredded one end  ?   Does the speedo work at any stage ?

I used to have problems with a 2 litre where the cable ran too close to the extractors and cooked it, relocated the cable, problem solved.

I have had issues in the past with speedo cables melting on the extractors too.

Perhaps follow the cable when installed and use cables ties to ensure nothing will interfere with it again.

Is the engine earthed to the body?
Melting the speedo cable is common, but not near the box.
It could be trying to earth out though the cable.

This happens to accelorator cables on XF Fords.
