What Oil?

Hey guys,

Thought I'd change the oil in my car as I'm not exactly sure when it was last done. The Ford manual says 20W/50 for above -12 degrees celcius [88] Obviously a bit warmer in Oz, so wondering if you guys still use something like this or something different?

Full synthetic or not?

    Lots of choices....

Buy the best fully synthetic (with a good amount of zinc, phosphorous, and molybdenum) 10-40 you can afford (you will probably change oil every 5Kkm as cossies get a bit of fuel in the oil - however your engine is original?? or new pistons??) Of course the best way of picking an oil is with a temp gauge. I like the Joe Gibbs range or any sythetic with a good amount of moly (used for flat tappet engines). The newer synthetics have been taking zinc, phosphorous, and molybdenum to meet modern emissions.

I remember a guide on bobistheoilguy that listed the amounts in each oil.

Prepare for the lifters to get a little noisy if they are original.

Due to the iron block and the machining tolerances generally used, the normal 20W-50 is recommended by quite a number of people, just change it often, it is good to flush the system...This is what us Sydney folk do...

    Hi Paul,

I have used PENRITE SIN 10 Engine Oil 10W-70 for years in my cossies. I change the oil & filter every 12 months or 3000 miles.

    Cheers Matt

Thanks for the advice guys. Are you guys buying oil filters from the UK or sourcing a local replacement?

    Paul.

    I've been using Mobil 1 ... 15W-50.

You can't buy it off the shelf with this range though ... I have bought it direct from Mobil, and now from an eBay seller in Sydney who delivers.

Quite a few to choose from :)

I've ben using the Castrol Edge 10W60 in my race cars previously and haven't had any issues.

Linc, as far as I know the engine still has the original pistons.

What brand are the guys in Sydney using Mark?

I'm wondering along similar lines. As my car has been off the road for 18 years, I'm sure there are additives out there that might help smooth the running in process, soften seals a bit etc.
Anyone got useful info about these things or just use the Penrite.
I used penrite for years in my old work Falcon Wagons with good success.
    Cheers
