Nose cone repairs
Hello all. I am currently restoring my mk2 rs2000. I live in Adelaide and am after a repairer for a couple of nose cones that I have. The repairs are what I would call minor, that being a few rips (tears) that need fixing (plastic welding or gluing?). Any help appreciated as my painter got a couple of quotes which were more than I paid for the nose cone. Cheers Steve.

Steve,
When playing with these cars,
There is no price for satisfaction,
Quality and presentaion out weighs cost,
When you pay over $2000.00 dollars to get a pair of NOS front twin
cam guards off our own Australian warfies,
Then you know you have been screwed, fact.

Just fix it yourself not very hard to do. On mine i used some tin sheeting and cut some strips to go over the broken bits and glued on the back with silkaflex. The middle post i made a thin strip that wraps around it basically to strengthen all the weak points up. get some similar plastic and blowtorch the cracks with the spare plastic. Can't find any photos on it though but its 8-9 years ago now and its still holding up.

Hi Steve I have sent you a PM also but where did you send your nose cone as I'm looking to do the same? Also, were you happy with the result? Cheers

my nose cone was in decent condition but it was by no means in good condition. the guy who did all my body and paint on the rest of the car tackled the repair and while in my eyes it was a great success i know it pushed his patience quite a bit. he ended up bolting it back up on the car so he could line everything up before pulling it for the final paint. i am currently putting the car back together and have left it off to make the engine bay easier to access. his words for when it is ready to go back on the car, once on, it is staying on. Would recommend him to you guys but since we are in qld and you are in SA could be a bit of a challenge...

Thanks - I was planning the same to bolt it onto the car and see how it all lined up. I went to find all the bits last night and having trouble locating all the fasteners ets but that's a minor thing. Mines not too bad either but as you have said they can be quite difficult to get looking their best. I have 2 to choose from so will have to do a comparison and make a call on what one I think fits the best irrespective of what one needs more work I think.

yeah they are touchy buggers that is for sure. since i have owned mine have only seen the nose cone mounted on the car once and that was via a photo. Wont get to see it on properly for a little while yet while i try and re-assemble everything else. good to find a few other guys in the same rs2000 boat as myself :)

Not sure on the repair of them but fitting is do-able at home. Leave everything loose to start with then adjust from there and don't over tighten when done, they tear or warp easily. Theres alot of movement in the steel bumper this will fix the sag in the front but don't push it to far or you'll crack the paint. Same in the sides lots of room for adjustment. Getting the bumper end to sit flush to the body can be a challenge. I had to space the top of mine out with washers to get a nice even bonnet gap. What are peoples thoughts on painting the black on the bumper and grill? I left mine in its raw state, they don't seem to look right to me painted. Cheers Drew.

When prepping the shell and nose I'm assuming having the nose fitted to make minor adjustments to the guards (filler etc) to ensure an exact fit? When refurbishing the nose is it best to have it fitted to the car to assess what needs to be done before removal for any repairs? Would a normal panel shop deal with the nose cone repairs and fitment?

Definitely fit the nose cone firmly in place to allow for any adjustments to the guards to get a nice flush fit. I painted mine separately and then found I had to get guards panelbeaten to make it line up neatly. I would also recommend getting the inside of the cone painted and fitting to the body in its final position to allow the front to be painted at the same time as the rest of the body. I found fitting the plastic headlight surrounds to be a struggle ( again, painted separately) and ended up getting some cracks in the paint, even though primed with a proper plastic primer. My car is fully colour coded in Diamond white- grill, bumpers front and rear, the lot.

hi all, this type of plastic is a nightmare to repair. most repairers use a 2 part glue to join and fix holes. its not too hard to do this , but its only the start. all primers and top coats need to have flex add in them to minimize cracking. getting these straight are not fun. usually a similar injected foam/plastic is used. it will not weld. hence the glue.

I'm about to find out if they can be welded - apparently they can with the correct fill rod which has been referenced elsewhere. I may be able to glue and reinforce mine from behind and fill / sand from the front. I have 2 nose cones but my other one has all the grill cut out for better cooling so it's a little flimsy in this area.

Look up TERESON plastic repair kit. If the plastic is yellow , this will be a safer option to fix it. also the glue they use is flexible . If you had another spare bar you could use strips of this to use as filler rods. a hot air gun would probably be best.
