steering wheel leather binding

Hi All,

Can someone please clarify if the original non GT steering wheel (the one without the steel parts at the end of each arm) came out with the same leather binding as the GT steering wheel ?

    No. It has dimples at the rear for your fingers, its just plastic

    I saw one of the standard wheels with a properly sewn on leather cover and with the three spokes painted silver. It looked quite good and certainly didn't cost as much as the factory optional wheel.

    It's probably also worth noting that the leather bound 'sports steering wheel' was optional fitment across the range, and not fitted as standard to GT models (according to sales literature). I guess it's quite likely that dealers regularly fitted these to GT cars, but I've seen many original GT's without the leather wheel.

    Correct Jamie.Seeing the last option wheel went thru the roof.
    I'm going down the Momo wheel road .Firstly for safety -I don't
    Don't fancy a 40 year wheel snapping on me in an accident.IMHO
    Secondly there are some sporty driving wheels
    Which don't look out of place on

    I'll probably switch to a Momo before getting my 1600 back on the road, as it currently has a SAAS wheel from the mid/late 80's (RS2600 style) which may be too small a diameter to pass inspection.

    I have a Twin Cam wheel here, which is essentially the same as the Capri option wheel, but too cumbersome to drive with for me.

    Back in the day(early seventies) I had a twincam escort and two v6 gt, not all at once of course. They all had the standard plastic wheel, I never even knew about the optional "sports" wheel until recently when i started getting interested in the cars again.
    The wheel on the twinc worked well as the car had light steering and the thin rim allowed a reasonable view of the guages.
    The same wheel on the v6 however was a bit of a disaster for me I think because of the higher turning effort my hands were always getting sweaty and slipping, or it could have been the speeds i was taveling at with effectively no brakes was making me nervous. So early on i replaced it with a smaller leather bound saas wheel and had no more trouble.(at least not with the steering, stopping was another thing.)
