New Starter Motor - Hi-Torque

Need a new starter motor for my Pinto.

Was looking around at what's on offer and can't find much. Saw Burtons is offering a 1.4kw unit. Anyone used these? It only had two bolt holes whereas my Bosch unit has three. A bit odd?

Any other suggestions?

For those interested here are photos og the Hi-Torque starter motor unit. There is no ignition wire attachement, just the starter wire.

Very powerful and neat looking unit.

Just my observation is that the 2 allen bolts holding the motor to the adaptor are going to cop the bulk of the load, torsionally and Shear, I'd upgrade and loctite those buggers.. be nice if there were three, I'd also say there probably is no issue but it LOOKS marginal.

Its the thickness left, on adaptor plate, after recessing, thats crap.

When the pinion and fly gear are trying to wedge them selves apart.

No amount of loctites gonna help there.

    Poor design [V]

The adjustable bracket has a recess where the starter motor snuggly fits into. It's St least 8-10pm deep. So you can't bend it out. Torsionally I can see a certain point about the two bolts however they are snugly fitted as well. But honestly the starter motor isn't used that often and this design is used on many different v8's etc. If after all these years there was something wrong with the design I'd imagine they wouldn't be in business anymore. Just my 2 cents....

    Yeah basically
Mine was the first one and don't have slots in the main mounting holes and when I ordered the spare they did the same as I've got theads in one of the holes

Just fitted it to my car having re-wired it. Taken 5 months. Started instantly! [:p] The geared design is awesome.

    Thanks for this Nathan

Based on this thread I bought one and installed it last week. Absolutely fantastic, no more hassles at all! Old (and still good) standard starter motor could barely turn my new higher comp engine over.

    $410 delivered though [B)]
