Trace VIN Number through Ford

Hi All,
Myself, Dad and my brother are looking to buy a classic Ford to do a bit of racing and club events in. We have found a few suitable cars, however none of them have the compliance plate still attached, which is important to us because we also want to register the car for road use.
An engineer at the local repair centre told my Dad that the compliance plate info(which is needed for rego) could be traced back through Ford via the vin number, which is still ledgible on all the cars we are looking at.(and no, the engineer didn't know who to contact at Ford).
So, the question is: Does anyone know who to contact or how to go about this with Ford?[x2x]

I'd imagine there is a dept in charge of records, however the helpful lady at the customer center said I would have to take the car to the nearest Ford dealer and get them to inspect it.[xx(]

Are compliance plates specific to an individual car? Reason I ask is that at the wreckers they're usually still attached. So if you found a car that was exactly the same model perhaps it would be okay to use its compliance plate

You cannot attach plates to your car that came from other cars, the compliance will usually have the chassis number of the car it came from stamped on it. In order to register a car without plates your local road authorities and Police will do a search on the cars vin / chassis number and confirm tht it is not stolen. The roads body will allocate a new number to it which you get stamped on and then get it RWC and in your name.
