Would someone explain to me why all themobs doing these repros ask for "top metal tops?" They never came with metal, it was all pressed cardboard.

Yes your right they were all cardboard,
I saw them on ebay last night and I emailed them on the 13th of this month and still had no reply so I rang them an or so ago and they ask me to re email and they will get back , waiting ,waiting ,waiting ha ha
I wonder if you take a 2 door board and cut it back to suit the length of a 4 door and then turn the left hand side around and put it on the right hand rear door and cut it short then trim them, and same the other way,
Just a thought

I spent the first 5 yesrs of Escort ownership chasing these elusive metal tops and still haven't found them despite getting doors cards and buying cars that were all original (across several years or production - 1976-1979). Could it be that they are so used to retrimming GT falcon doors etc, they think they all have them?

NOTE!!! You need to supply "tops".......Same as I had to do... "They" promised me "all new" and ended up with a new flat part but my original formed tops fibre glassed to them. Not what I wanted... I paid good coin for the "real deal"......Too good to be true.... Summary - find good/excellent originals...

the mk2 van and estate has the same doors as a mk1 2 door car and mk1 van.mk1 and mk2 vans are identical from the A pillar backwards. the mk2 van front guard is different to the mk1 guard.the dashtop in a mk2 van looks the same as the mk2 car dashtop, but its about an inch shorter than the car dash. hope this helps. cheers

Thanks Liam for clearing that up. I was also told that the MK1&2 van dash steel panel is the same as the MK1 car in length, enabling a MK2 type dash to be fitted to a MK1 car. Do you know if that is correct?

the van dashtop will definitely fit, length wise, but i think there might be a bit of modifying required where the speedo/tacho gauges fit in. i have seen a mk1 with the mk2 dash fitted, so its definitely possible
