yeah i figured something like that. i had a good look over everything before driving it. has oil and brake fluid. maby its losing pressure. motor will most likley be coming out so its no real issue. just wanted to drive it. never driven a mk1 before.

One light should be orange and one red,

orange is oil and red is a power discharge like alternator,

Don't get too stressed. Red is the alternator. The std alternators are borderline at bet in the mk1. I ran mine for a couple of months with the red light glowing but still enough charge to run high beams and wipers for the two hour run into Melbourne. Get a multimeter onto the battery, turn on everything you can in the car to load the sucker up and see what voltage your getting. There may or may not be a problem.

That said mine went out when I put a newer Bosch alternator in

Definately the alternator light. check if its charging with a multimeter as said before.
its probably just the brushes in the alternator, just get a new set and put them in. or if you need more power, upgrade it to a 55amp one, think the original mk1's were 35??

Gee, put the fear into us why dont you [:p]

It's easy to tell what it means, because the glow is affected by the cars revs. As soon as the engine is off idle, the lamp goes out.
