9" diff

wondering id any-1 had got a 9" cut down for an escort/small corty
Im thinking about doing it coz Im constantly smashing spider gears or axles and am sick of it, is it possible to just get one then get it cut down/engineered to suit??

I reckon you would find any advantage in strength would be negated by the weight. 9" diffs are bloody heavy!

What are you doing that is breaking your diffs and axles?

Get a falcon diff mate, plenty strong enough without the weight of a 9". Also have you concidered how much power a 9" will rob from your car just trying to turn the diff? Old hilux diff is a tried and proven diff (also about the easiest diff conversion known to man) but they are starting to get real thin on the ground.

Best option is to part company with the Escort and buy a real man's car - a Falcon with the 9" and top loader and a Cleveland. But then maybe keep the Escort to take ma shopping, or if it is raining and you don't want to get the Falcon wet.

Back in the day I got the LSD centre fron a falcon and got a TE Cortina housing cut down to fit my mk2 escort. Worked great cos I only cut one side and made the short side the new long side and cut the long axle way back. Had enough meat on it to spline it. Stud pattern was the same as Escort and the drum brakes were marginally larger. Was a little bit of mucking about but that thing absorbed alot of punishment from myself and the owner after me.

Was a few years ago but from memory it was pretty damn straight forward and it bolted right in after the housing was shortened and had the brackets put on. I think I stayed with the cortina ratio too which was 3.77 or 3.89 iirc.
