Condensor screw...

Does anyone know what size it is, on a 1300 with Lucas gear?

And also, if the one that used to be on there has fallen down the dizzy, is that a problem? I really should just stop playing with these things [:I]

I thought that might be the answer.

Next question, what's the best way to get it out? Pull the dizzy out and up-end it, or can i take the plates out to get to it?

Quickest way would be to mark the position of the dizzy body and rotor, take the whole dizzy out and give it an upside down shake. If it fell in, it should fall out

I tried taking the thing out at lunchtime. I undid the bolt (what a unpleasant individual that is to get at between the brake booster, heater hoses and inlet manifold) but it didn't come out all the way cause it hit on the body of the dizzy. And all the dizzy does now is twist around, it doesn't feel like its going to come out. I checked on a couple of my spare engines but of course they're not Lucas ones.

Is there a trick to getting the buggers out?

Ummmm you did take the dizzy cap off, right? And did you undo the clamp to block bolt or the pinch bolt(latter shouldn't make any difference, but worth a try). What exactly is hitting on what to prevent it coming all the way? Sounds like you will need to re-time your ignition, unless it's been marked / photographed for lining up on reinstallation

Yeah Robert, dizzy cap is off. It doesn't look like there is a pinch bolt on it, I've had a look around it and a feel and can't see one.
I undid the clamp to block bolt and it doesn't come out all the way because the bolt hits on the body of the dizzy. I'll try and get some photos to show what I mean, its a bit hard to get in there with all the crap in the way.
I have a picture of it all before I started messing with it, so hopefully it'll go back somewhere near where its meant to be.

Here's a picture of the bracket that's holding things on. Its like there is a separate clamp rather than the one piece jobbie on all my spare engines. I've got the bolt out as far as it'll go, but the dizzy won't pull out as the clamp is still holding it on. I tried turning the clamp around but it catches on the block and won't release the dizzy.

The other ones all look like this (number 30).

Hmmmm doesn't look like yours has the original setup ... and maybe not even the original dizzy (which should be held by a pinch bolt as per #30) but pj is right, if they're both (bolt and body)taken out together it should come loose. Maybe lever the body up with a screwdriver while you undo the bolt...

Cheers for the help Robert and PJ. I'll have another crack at it tomorrow and try levering the clamp bit up as I undo the bolt.

And PJ you're right about the pain in the azz bit. That'll learn me to hold on to the damn screw next time! Maybe I should chuck an electronic ignition setup in it while its out so I won't have to worry about points again.

"and try levering the clamp bit up as I undo the bolt"

.....Try the dizzy too; lever it up so it starts to come out as the bolt is unscrewed, it is likely jammed in....Agree to the "pain in the azz"...It would not be an Escort unless you had this, ha...Good luck Pete!

I got the bugger out. Recovered the screw, and put it back in while it was out of the car just in case I dropped it again! Gave it a clean while it was out too.

You were right about it being a pain in the azz. But its all back in now, and it looks like it might be somewhere near where it needs to be too. Fingers crossed that it all works ok when the new cap and rotor turn up.
