Reverse Switch Snapped

The Reverse switch snapped off today when I was swapping it over. It wasn't even tight.

Anyway its broken on the nut section - that has fallen out and the threaded piece is still in the gearbox.

I know it will need to be taken out - but the query is can it be done with the gearbox still in the car? There isn't a lot of room to get anything up there to tap into it and unthread it - only saving grace is it should not be super tight.

Tell me why I stuff around with 30 year old cars again.

Because you feel like a kid again, every time you drive the pos.
Easy fix. Don't remove the box.

I was hoping to use working reverse lights to pass the roadworthy so I can get it registered (unless I can convince the mechanic that they never had that feature)

With gear lever removed you might be able to get at it easier from the top, even from the inside?

    fair enough.
my reverse switch failed so i just disconnected it. figured it was better to have no reverse lights rather than reverse lights on all the time.. haha

can't remember really how much room is in there but.
get a right angled screw driver and painstakingly 1/4 turn it out.

could you get a socket with a torx head into it and a small socket wrench?

Make a tool out of some steel rod!

get a very small socket and put a dab of silicone on it and glue it to it, leave it a day or so and then unscrew it.

Is it easier to get to from the gear shifter?
    All i can think of.

The idea of taking the gear stick out from earlier post seems the easiest. Will test it this weekend.

Got the remnants out this afternoon.

Coming from the top didn't work. The pin came out and that allowed me to put an Allen Key in there and undo it that way (Allen Key was at an angle so it would bite in - fortunately it wasn't tight)
