Getting bits together to go back on ...

installed ...

Now thats the PAS system sorted ... a new drive belt and all new hoses with super duper (shiny stainless steel) hose clamps ... at last time to add some fluid.

I thought whilst I had the inner wing apart I might as well replace the washer fluid hose that was looking old/cooked/sh*t

Heres the washer pump and hose to show you what I mean ...

So the plan was to replace the old tubing by useing some new clear PVC hose (4mm by the way ... surprisingly hard to find ) and some left over black heatshrink from my electrical jobs to produce a factory finish ...

Now that the washer bottle was in and the electrical wiring to the pump and sensor was tidyed up it was time to install the header tank but first I neaded to replace the sensor seal (it had been cooked and hardened over the years) and when i took out the sensor to clean the bottle I found that it to had fallen apart ... so a new sensor was in order ...

and some you beaut fluids for the cleaned fluid reservoirs ...

Heres the header tank fitted, filled and sporting a new sticker ...

But after filling the header tank and letting it sit ... I noticed a coolant leak already ... the one hose I did not replace from the water pump ('cause I'm going to order a full set of silicone coolant hoses from Roose ... black no stickers) and replace it soon anyway ... so I've got another hose today but I still need to fit it.

At least I haven't run it and bleed the system already

I'm getting there ...

So after finding the damaged wiring, and hearing a few nasty fire stories I decided it was a good idea to go out and buy/fit one of these ... Cheap insurance [B)]

It was then time to finish off the tubing for the windshield jets.

I used the same technique as before, PVC tubing and a little heat shrink (cooked on with my new pyropen) for a 'factory' look ...

and then the washer jet ...

This is the hose on the water pump that leaked (static) when I added coolant to the header tank ...

as I said I didn't replace it at the time and now I had to get a new hose (cut to length) and replace it in-situ [V] I thought it looked a bit 'soft' and I replaced the other hoses that seemed dodgy so its my own fault.

Anyway job done.

So here we go ... all parts back in place (many replaced/upgraded) and ready for me to crank it over (bleed the PAS system, get some oil moving), start it and bleed the coolant system (from the bleed at the thermostst housing ) and give it a test drive

the drivers side of the bay ready ...

the heart and soul ...

and where the most work was done ... all back together and fluids filled (oh and a new ignition coil which got a bit of a polish) ...

I cranked the engine with the front still of the ground and bleed the PAS system (and to get some engine oil moving) ... no probs just had to keep getting out and adding fluid.

Then I put the car on the ground (it had been that long I forgot how low it is ... I was use to working on it up in the air). A couple of cranks and she fired into life.

I was a bit worried as I wasn't sure if I was going to have issues with the immobiliser being unpowered for so long ... but nope, all good.

I had a long hose connected to the bleed on the thermostat and when coolant came out (when hot enough to open the thermostat) I clamped it with some vice grips, took off the hose and installed my new original blanking plug. Engine was a little tappety but after I started driving it it's all quiet now.

But ... something always has to go wrong ... stupidly I put my sunglasses ($400 Maui Jims) on the car (and I thought to myself at the time 'thats a stupid place for them' [:o)]) ... and later, in excitment, I forgot about them and I drove off. Bye bye sunnys [V]

Anyway, after a test drive (and fuel fill up and air for the tyres) I had a really good look around and no leaks at all.

So in summary I have gone from this ...

to this ...

The main things being ... new water pump (old one was leaking) and thermostat, new PAS hoses (one was seeping, one was cracking), wiring repairs/replace/tidy up (dangerous damaged wiring replaced), fluid bottles cleaned out, all new fluids, newbelts, washer jet tubing replaced, a really good deep clean (including polish on inner wings) and a new sticker kit.

Some more engine bay pictures, 'cause we all like looking at Cosworths! ...

Enjoy

During the test drive i took the car down to jet wash the dust and crap off it from being under the cover for so long ...

and I whacked some air into the tyres (tbh I'm surprised they're still round as it was parked for so long) ...

Looks good, nice work.

Is that the original header tank? If so, how did you clean it?

Cheers boys

TCR ... yes its the original. I soaked the header tank in warm water and clothes washing detergent (I used to wash my hands with clothes soap after a hard day!) and used a bottle brush bent into allsorts of angles to scrub. Did a good job, but I made sure it was very well rinsed afterwards!

Linc ... thank you, I hope that includes the six deg rear beam

I'd driven it a couple of times now (mainly to work) and it was time to start a service. All doors lubricated etc etc but most importantly a service to the ignition components (I remember how sensitive my 'pinto' escort was for a strong spark ... and I'm reading that the old 'yb' is much the same) so this little lot went in ...

I wasn't having problems with the car but the new plugs/dizzy cap/rotor/coil makes it feel smoother, anyway some more pics ...

Well I've made it to 2008 ! ...

On the weekend I displayed my car for the first time at 'Small Ford Sunday' ... I had been to it a couple of times and they get some great cars there (Escorts, Capris, Cortinas, Fiestas, Focus' etc) and this year was the biggest gathering I had seen.

I knew of a couple of cars that were around and I got to put some faces to names. I had a look around but didn't get to take many pictures of the other cool stuff ... enjoy.

Mines the second from the left ...

Its not often you see this sight in Aus ...

The turn out (for 'cosworths') got to four Moonstone three doors, one saph, one Escos and one black RS500.
