You'll be able to fit one in with a lot of messing around but you'll never be able to get it road registered. Biggest engine they'll approve is 3.5 litres.

Really ???? Maybee that Rover V8 is a goer then. Don't they do that for a lot of the classic rallies in the UK ? I've heard that the Rover V8 (being all alloy) is lighter than a pinto[:x)]

Don't take my word for it. Ask your engineer. 3.5 litres is the figure I was given a couple of years ago for a 2 litre Escort.

Here's a nugget for you. It's easier to have a factory spec 2.3 litre Duratec approved in an Escort than it is to have twin webers or a mild cam approved on the original Pinto engine (if you car was built after June 1976).

The thing is with engine changes, more cubes or killowasps are not always (rarely) the best way to go. A couple of years ago I saw a Mk1 Escort at an autocross with a huge turbo bolted on the side of pinto. Off boost it was a dog, it would spool up and the car would light up the wheels uncontrollably with the driver fighting to keep the car straight..... Very entertaining to watch[88][88][88], didn't look like the driver was having too much fun though.

Ok it's no longer legal to put a V8 into a Escort. But even if it wasn't, why the hell would you want to?? There's so many other legal engine choices these days that would get the same power (and some) and much better drivability, balance, ect, ect.

The only reason I can think of is that V8 sound that we all love. Apart from that fact, a V8 Escort is a dinosaur.

Engine capacity size is worded as largest 'recommeneded'.....

MOST engineers wont pass any higher than that however it IS still possible however most unlikely.

I do know of one MK1 cortina that is still being built with V8 for reg and is still passing regular engineer/tech inspections.

While I love modern technology, esp the jap 4/6 turbo engines I completely dissagree with V8's being dinasaurs.

Have you seen some of the new technology in recent cylinder head development?

(Dont forget the dinosaur powered LS9 corvette originally lapped Nurmburgring quicker than the new 'more technology than NASA' Nissan GT-R)

and I'm guessing an all alloy windsor will weigh less than an SR20DET!!!

If you do need any info on LS1's. measurements etc, check out this thread - http://www.turbosport.co.uk/showthread.php?151653-Is-it-possible-to-put-in-a-ls1-in-Escort

    That said,

Just throw a jap front cut in it like everyone else! It is the way to go for a reason. It'll be cheaper in the long run and you will be able to get reg.
