Gearbox Dramas

Hey all, could anybody help me i've got a type 5 4 speed (rs3100) box that im about to put in my car, but the main shaft seems to be short. the standard 4 speed box's shaft just sticks past the face of the bellhousing, but on the rs box the input shaft sits back about 28mm. has anybody else come across this? by my measurements it will only sit in the clutch by 20mm and locate into the crank. cheers Owen

    When I recoed my original box I bought the parts from Burtons as for the type 5, so the two boxs have interchangeable parts. So if needs be then you should be able to change the input shafts over.

    There are 2 different input shafts for the Type 5. one is for the 3 litre Essex and 1 is for the Cologne (early 2.8i was a 4 speed). Check the nose piece they are obviously different the cologne has a longer unsplined nose section (spline is the same). Good news is thta if you have a cologne box you can swap input shafts straight over from your original side clunker

    Cheers guys, but i still have a problem! if i change the short shaft in the rs box to an aussie long shaft, i cannot use the aussie thrust bearing snout, it has 3 bolts whereas the rs box has 4 bolts, so the thrust bearing carrier will not a shaft to glide on.?? O

    Sounds like its engineering shop time, get the rs "snout" lengthened.

    Or use a 2lt escort one IIRC they have the same bolt holes but are a touch longer
