Are these the callipers for the Volvo Brake Upgrad

Hi Guys,

My cousin gave me some volvo callipers that were sitting under his house for 5 years and I want to know are these the callipers required to fit the BMW / Laser TX3 disks for the Volvo brake upgrade?

They have a big G with an arm holding onto itself.

I have tried for hours to get photos up but I think the site has issues and won't allow it for some reason.

Also where do you get the rebuild kit for the callipers and what part number is it?

Cheers

Matt

I have the ATE versions of the volvo calipers and they don't have the big G and have more bleed nipples but they look pretty similar otherwise! The whole volvo caplier story is a complex one I reckon, and I suspect that both ATE and Girling designed and built calipers to volvos specs. If someone could sort it out they would be some sort of hero in my eyes.

I *think* they should be ok - what is the width spacing? Could you fit ~ 19mm vented rotors between the two halves? what's happening on the other side? Is there a T peice connecting a seperate brake line to each pot?

Not sure about those calipers Matt. I thought the ones to get were without the big G on the side. They came off a 244 or 245 early 80's with a vented rotor. Here's a pic of mine.

Got more pics if you need as well.

You can get both the ATE and Girling calipers to fit, but the ones to go for are the Girling as the ATE only has the smae sized pads as the Escort M16 calipers... The additional pad area of the Girlings is where the main benefit comes from... Evidently early Volvos had the ATE, but the later ones had the Girling, and there were mixtures of both on the front and rear for a few years... Both are available in vented and solid disc style, but the Girlings are most common in the vented style which is what we need [:x)]

PS - I found out the hard way and have a set of the ATE's already modified for an Escort that have never been on an Escort somewhere in the garage... My brake guy told me the differences and I went back and got the right ones....

Right so after a trip out to the shed in the dark I've compared my spare EBC greens - off my volvo ATE? calipers with M16. Is this the same sort of size difference you would expect with The Right Girling calipers vs. M16? Do I in fact have Girlings?

    Avon,

There are more bleed nipples on the other side of the calliper. I'll take some more photos tonight when I get home.

I'll also measure the piston diameter and the pad size so I can work out what the F&^k I have.

I was given them along with a bunch of other escort stuff so i am pretty sure they are the right ones but am just after clarification.

    Cheers

Another way to work it out is to check the pad numbers which can be done on the Bendix website http://www.bendix.com.au/catalogue?manufacturer=Volvo&model=240%20Series
If your pads dont have any numbers on the back the website has diagrams that you can match up.

Girling calipers for Volvo 2 series use DB549 pads whilst the ATE's use DB62.

I agree with earlier comments that the Girling is the way to go.

Bit hard to tell by the photo, but look to be about the same size... From memory the Girling ones are about 50% longer than the ATE/M16 sized pads...

Ah - I have Girlings not ATEs thanks to the bendix website part numbers and pics.

Matt, I reckon you're good to go - based on the width of the pad retaining pins you have the DB549 pads in there.

So there is at least 3 variants of the correct Girling caplier! Mine look like Craigs but have 3-4 nipples per caliper.

Here are the shots of both sides of the callipers showing the 3 bleed nipples.

Here is the pad diameters. There are no numbers on them.

The pistons appear to have a diameter of 30mm with an internal one of about 26mm.

Hope this makes it easier to work out what I have although I am 99% certain these are the good ones.

    Cheers

Have had a look on the bendix website and the DB549 padds are 98 x 60 x 16 mm so that pretty much confirms I have the right ones.

Thaks to all those for their input.

Can anyone out there help me to get them slotted and also to modify the hub? Can pay in cash or beer?

    Cheers

    There are 4 options:

    1) Slot with file (most common option)
    2) Fill mounting holes with molten steel and re-drill.
    3) Drill out mount hole to larger size and get some offset bushes made up
    4) Change position of mounting bolts on strut.

1,2 and 4 have all been done before to my knowledge. You *might* get an Engineer to approve 2,3 or 4.
