Aussie Escort Mk2 gearboxes are essentially a Cortina 2Lt type E gearbox in the Pommy parliance... however we our Escort Mk2 gearboxes have a different extension housing with the gearlever and the mount in a different position to the Pommy RS2000/RS1800 which used the same basic type E box (but with an allow bellhousing, and in the RS1800 a closer gearset too).... The remainder of the Pommy range of Mk2 Escorts used type 2 or 3 gearboxes which we only used in some early Mk1 Escorts from my limited knowledged of Mk1's. (I think it is the type 2 that has the integral bellhousing on the gearbox) THats why the Poms use RS2000 gearbox spacers to install RS2000 / Cortina / Type E boxes in Mk2 Escorts as their gearboxes are not quite the same as ours...

Those who tell you a 2Lt Cortina box and a 2Lt Escort box are the same have never seen them side by side obviously... They will bolt up to the engine, but will not bolt to the crossmember an the gearlever hole in an Aussie shell is in a different position to a Pommy RS2000 which will take the Cortina 2Lt box (with the gearbox spacers to lower and move the mounts rearward...)
