Wiring Queries

Trying to put the car back together & I'm hooking up all the interior bits & pieces.

Query is :-

I have a black wire that come out of the loom at the passengers side seat - it has a round male connection. It has a rubber gromet meaning it would pass through metal some where - but I've got no idea where. Any ideas?

Heater motor - wiring diagram indicates the motor is connected via:-

Black/Yellow/Red wite (round male connection) - what does this connect to?
Wiring diagram also indicates this needs a Brown & Yellow wire & a Brown & White wire. I can't see these anywhere, but assume they are part of the wiring that sits in behind the dash fashia?

I also have 2 sets of wires - Green & red that finish just through the fire wall and go now where. Any idea what these connect to (I have a hunch they go to the headlights or the relays

The first black wire sounds like the reverse switch, for the box.
The multi coloured male one will plug around the wiper motor area.
Anything green with red is the headlight jungle.

Throw the Gregory's Escort manual diagram away with the RS.

I have a great auto sparky on Bribie that knows his stuff.
You can waste some time with the spaghetti.

Escort shop owner Phil is also great with Escort wiring.

Tell me about it - lost this morning trying to get the fan/heater back in the car and the interior light operating. Didn't want to put anything back in place unless its working first. Results to date - Nil. Even my test light isn't working (but it cost $3 at SuperCr*p - so there are no surpises there).

I'm working on the theory that spark follows the line of least resistance - which means is difficult to find where the fault is. That said, I'm working away at it bit by bit & isolating the problems (ie: heater motor works when conected directly to the battery - therefore the motor works). Fundamentally most things have to come back to an earth problem or dud connections.

That said, I've got no idea what coloured wires are supposed to connect to the resistor (heater?) part of the heater/fan unit.

Sparky will be connecting the Air con in the new year. I can leave him with a list of things he can fix at the same time.

According to the Ford factory repair manual( I also checked my car's connections too) the wiring for the interior light should be a white wire with an orange stripe for battery & black wires from each of the door switches.
For the heater, the male connector(black wire with the red & yellow stripes) which comes from the heater fan should connect to a light green wire with a light blue stripe(with matching female connector, of course) from the loom. The three spade connections for the heater series resistor should consist of one brown wire(from the heater fan motor) & the other two run from the terminals on the dash fan switch, which should be one red wire with a grey stripe & one orange wire with a black stripe coming from the loom.
This is assuming your loom is a late 1979 or newer one though, as Ford revised the wiring in late '79 & some wire colours(among other things) differ from earlier looms, which the gregory's seems to have missed by the sounds of it, as the "brown/white & brown/yellow" wires you mentioned would be correct for an earlier mk2 escort loom.
Good luck, sounds like you're nearly there too!

I am close - but I've got a long way to go to. Expectation is to be almost on the road late this month, but that will require relying on a couple of trades people.

The different wiring on later model cars would make sense. Yesterday I discovered a purple wire in the boot - the 'Gregory's' has nothing purple in the boot area (ie: lights, rear demister, boot light).

Yeah, the 'Gregorys' for my BF2 Fairmont is a bit scant on detail too, to say the least!

A Violet wire with a white stripe should be for your rear demister. Runs from the dash switch to the relay & then on down the loom to the rear screen. . .in theory anyway. . .the joys of thirty year old wiring eh?

If its a late MK2 Escort i think you will find the purple wire goes to one side of the demister and the other side is brown.
